No. 5 Men's Soccer Claims NJAC Title With 4-2 Win Over Rowan

Montclair, NJ - The No. 5 and top-seeded Montclair State University claimed its ninth New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship with a 4-2 triumph over second-seeded Rowan University on Saturday night.

With the victory, the Red Hawks (17-2-1) claimed the NJAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will make their 21st appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Profs had the first scoring chance of the game, as a shot from inside the box was easily snared by SHANE KEENAN. Montclair's early try came in the 12th minute, with REED KARSEN's shot from distance was knocked out of bounds by a diving Rowan goalkeeper.
  • In the 17th minute, ANTHONY VIOLA slipped a through ball to AMER LUKOVIC. The junior broke free, but his blast was sent away. Keenan came up big in the 22nd minute as he dove right to deny Johnny Triano.
  • The Profs broke through for the opening marker in the 29th minute. Mason Martelloni intercepted a pass and one-touched the ball to Emiliano Pavia. Pavia turned and fired from the top of the 18 past Keenan, giving Rowan the 1-0 lead.
  • The Red Hawks pulled level in the 51st minute. Off a set piece, IAN CHESNEY sent a cross to the far post that Lukovic headed back across the box. ENIR RADONCIC was there and headed it near post, tying the game at one.
  • 76 seconds later, the Red Hawks took the lead for the first time. REED KARSEN's initial attempt stopped, but the rebound popped out to Lukovic. The junior deposited the ball into the back of the goal, giving Montclair the 2-1 edge.
  • Staked to the lead for the first time, the Red Hawks doubled their margin in the 61st minute. Lukovic's try was blocked, but the rebound caromed to Karsen. He ripped a shot into the top of the goal, extending the score to 3-1. Rowan hunted for goals, and a header from in tight was cleared off the line by Chesney.
  • The Profs pulled one back in the 76th minute, as after a scrum in the box, Pavia netted his second tally of the contest. With time ticking down, Lukovic bagged his second marker of the game as BRUNO ESPOSITO earned the assist.

FROM THE FIELD
"Hats off to Rowan for having a great game plan. I am happy for our guys. Some of these guys have a three-year regular season record of 25-1-1. I am glad that with all that success, they finally got the T-shirts and trophy they deserved." - Head Coach Todd Tumelty.
