Softball Knocks Off Rutgers-Newark In NJAC Opener

Newark, NJ – The Montclair State softball team took down Rutgers-Newark 9-1 and 12-2 in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Sunday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (16-4, 2-0 NJAC) fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the third of game one. Montclair even the contest in their next at-bat on an RBI single from CHLOE SAPERSTEIN that plated MELISSA CASELLA.
  • Montclair took the lead in the fifth, with JENNA MELUSO notching an RBI single up the middle to score MADISON LEECH.
  • The Red Hawks exploded for four runs in the sixth. KAYLEE DELOSSANTOS notched an infield hit and moved to second on a walk from ALYSSA BOROZAN. The two runners moved up on a groundout, and a walk to LIZ MULLEN loaded the bases. After STEPHANIE SERETIS brought a run home on a grounder, Meluso lined a single up the middle bringing home two runs. AMBER REED capped off the inning with an RBI triple to right field.
  • Montclair finished off the scoring in the seventh, scoring three times. KAYLA COSENTINO notched a sacrifice fly, and Mullen and Seretis delivered consecutive RBI doubles to make it 9-1. Staked to a 9-1 lead, ALI CAVALLARO retired the Scarlet Raiders 1-2-3 in the seventh.
  • The Red Hawks wasted little time in game two, scoring twice in the first. Seretis had an RBI groundout, while Meluso recorded an RBI double. The Scarlet Raiders answered, tying the contest at two with a two-run single.
  • Montclair erupted for seven tallies in the third, breaking the game open. Reed and NIKKI LUSNIA notched two-run hits, with Mullen and Seretis tallying consecutive RBI singles. The Red Hawks added three runs in the fourth, as Lusnia helped her own cause with a double down the left-field line.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Meluso went 3-for-5 with three RBI in game one, with Reed going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two triples.
  • Cavallaro scattered two hits with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort to move to 8-2 on the season.
  • Lusnia struck out nine in five innings and batted 2-for-3 with four RBI.
  • Reed went 2-for-4 in the nightcap, adding two RBI and two runs scored.
UP NEXT
The Red Hawks host Kean University in their NJAC home opener Tuesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 pm at the MSU Softball Stadium.
