Mullen's Sacrifice Fly Helps Softball Split With Stockton

Montclair, NJ – LIZ MULLEN delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to help the Montclair State softball team split with Stockton University Thursday.

The Red Hawks (20-16, 6-12 NJAC) fell 4-2 in the opener before winning 2-1 in nine innings in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless four innings in game one, the Ospreys broke through for four in the fifth. Stockton strung together three hits in the frame to take a 4-0 lead after four and a half.
  • The Red Hawks cut the lead in the sixth, loading the bases on singles from STEPHANIE SERETIS and AMBER REED and a walk to Mullen. MARIAH CARRASCO drew a six-pitch walk for the first run before a fly ball from JULIANA CASILLAS brought the second run home.
  • Montclair could not get any closer, as they were set down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
  • The Red Hawks took a 1-0 advantage in the second inning of game two. Mullen reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a stolen base. Carrasco singled up the middle, allowing Mullen to score safely.
  • Montclair nearly doubled their lead in the fifth, but ALYSSA BOROZAN was gunned out at home looking for an inside-the-park home run. Stockton evened the game in the seventh on an infield single, sending the game into extra innings.
  • Neither side pushed a run across in the eighth, and in the ninth, Stockton had a batter called out on a failure to re-enter the game, setting the stage for Montclair. After pinch-runner MELISSA CASELLA moved to third on a Seretis sacrifice, Mullen's fly ball to centerfield was deep enough to score Casella from third and set off a celebration.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Mullen and Carrasco had RBI in the second game.
  • NIKKI LUSNIA allowed three hits and one run over six innings, striking out five. Seretis fanned three in three innings of relief.
