Second Half Rally Leads Men's Lacrosse Past Mary Washington

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's lacrosse team erased a three-goal halftime deficit by outscoring Mary Washington 11-4 in the second half en route to an 18-14 triumph in the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Quarterfinals.
 
The Red Hawks (11-7) move onto the Semifinals, where they will face top-seeded Salisbury University Friday at 4 pm.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two sides scored furiously in the early part of the game, combining for five markers in the first 4:16. The Eagles tallied six of the following eight goals, opening up a 9-5 advantage.
  • The Red Hawks took advantage of a non-releasable penalty late in the second quarter, as MATT DANCSECS pumped in a pair of man-up goals. The second tally came off a feed from TYLER MCCREERY with 23 ticks left.
  • Mary Washington held a 10-7 edge at the halftime break, outshooting Montclair 27-23 over the first 30 minutes.
  • After the teams traded goals early in the third, the Red Hawks reeled off four straight markers to grab a 12-11 lead. TYLER MCCREERY scored an unassisted goal to tie it at 11 before assisting on CONNOR GABILANES goal two minutes later.
  • Mary Washington scored twice in a 41-second span to jump back in front before JOE COVINO's tally off a pass from RYAN VIERBUCHEN leveled action at 13 entering the fourth.
  • The Covino goal led Montclair to a 5-1 spurt in the fourth, with MIKE MCCREERY giving Montclair the lead for good. Dancsecs and Vierbuchen netted single goals as ETHAN MOUNIER poured in the final two.

  • Dancsecs led the Red Hawks with four goals as T. McCreery, Covino, and Mounier added three.
  • CORBIN QUINTERO caused four turnovers on the backline, with LUCAS NOVACK grabbing a team-best four ground balls.
  • DAVID METZGER made 16 saves in the win.
