Volleyball Knocks Off Centenary In Four Sets

Bethlehem, Pa. – The Montclair State University volleyball team rallied after dropping the first set to top Centenary University 3-1 in their season-opener Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (1-0) took a 12-7 lead in the opening frame after a kill from MIA CAPRIGLIONE. An 8-3 spurt by the Cyclones leveled the frame at 15, and a kill from RACHEL CURRAN pushed Montclair in front 23-20. Centenary answered with the final five points to claim set one.
  • Montclair registered seven of the first 10 points of the second stanza, including three consecutive attack errors from Centenary. The Cyclones battled back, getting within a pair at 10-8.
  • Consecutive Capriglione kills stretched the margin to seven before a 5-0 spurt pushed the lead into double figures. EMILY FERRI slammed down a kill to bring up set point before an unforced attack error leveled the match at one.
  • The third period went back and forth, with Montclair taking an 11-6 lead on the heels of an ace from GABBY KONRAD and kills from ZOEY HORN and Curran. A Curran ace and kill from SKYE RAMSEY made it 19-10, and a 5-0 spurt with EMMA HATCHER on the service line made the score 24-11. Capriglione polished the frame with a kill off a feed from EMILY CARCICH to give Montclair their first set lead of the night.
  • With Montclair up 12-8, Horn served up four points, with Curran netting two kills and LILY THOMAS pounding home a kill to make it 16-8. Centenary would get as close as six the rest of the way, with Montclair ending the match on an attack error.

FROM THE COURT
"We did a great job settling in after a slow start. Centenary came out and played us very aggressively. Once we settled in our serve receive, and defense, the offense started clicking. I thought Emily did a great job distributing the offense, and it was great to see first-year players perform well." – Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks face Ursinus at 10 am and host Moravian at noon to close out the two-day Invitational.
