Football Falls In Overtime To Franklin & Marshall

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University football team suffered a 31-25 overtime setback to Franklin & Marshall in the home-opener Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two sides traded punts early before the visiting Diplomats drew first blood in the first quarter. Taking advantage of a turnover on downs, the Diplomats tossed a 19-yard TD to make the score 7-0.
  • A field goal made it 10-0, and using a short field after a fumble recovery, F&M went 21 yards in two plays to extend the lead to 17-0 with 10:01 remaining in the second.
  • JALIL TERRELL picked up off a pass in the endzone, and Montclair needed just four plays to get on the board. Sanborn absorbed contact and fired a strike to CLARENCE WILKINS, who went 68 yards for the score.
  • The Red Hawks forced a three-and-out and got into the endzone right before halftime. Sanborn linked up with ZACH LEWIS for 25 yards before scampering nine yards for a first down. Three plays later, the quarterback weaved through defenders before diving in for a 16-yard rushing touchdown.
  • Late in the third, the Diplomats drove down the field, chewing nearly six minutes off the clock. Quarterback Ty Tremba looked to the endzone, but Terrell notched his second interception, giving Montclair the ball back.
  • ABELLANY MENDEZ opened the drive with 25 yards, and the Red Hawks used the run to get inside the five-yard line. Mendez got over the goal line from one yard out, giving Montclair their first lead at 18-17.
  • An unnecessary roughness call against F&M on the kickoff pinned the guests deep in their own territory before a short punt gave Montclair the ball at the 18-yard line. The drive stalled out, as Sanborn was denied on fourth-and-one from the one.
  • The Red Hawks' defense forced another turnover as ERIC COWAN came off the edge and blasted Tremba, knocking the ball loose. JAKE COLON fell on it, setting Montclair up. Two plays later, Sanborn dove in from four yards, extending the margin to 25-17.
  • The Diplomats, who needed a touchdown and two-point conversion, went 79 yards in 17 plays to score a touchdown to get within two. The two-point conversion was successful, and the two sides went to overtime.
  • Montclair started with the ball, and on the second play, Sanborn was intercepted down the sideline, handing the ball back to guests. The Diplomats ended the game five plays later, scoring a touchdown.
