#7 Men's Soccer Edged by #23 Rowan

Montclair, NJ The #7 Montclair State University men's soccer team was edged by #23 Rowan 1-0 on Saturday night at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (11-3-1, 5-1-0 NJAC) saw themselves locked in a defensive battle with the visitors early, as neither side allowed a shot until the 19th minute, when Rowan sent an attempt on goal that had to be gathered by ALEXANDER VELASQUEZ.
  • Montclair saw their first scoring chance in the 31st minute, as SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI skied into the air and headed a ball towards the top of the net, which had to be parried over by the Profs. Lapczynski narrowly missed another chance four minutes later that had to be once again gathered by Rowan.
  • The Red Hawks started the second half on the front foot, registering the first three shots of the stanza. After SAMUEL EPITIME notched an attempt towards the top left corner of the net, OSBIN MENDEZ rocked the crossbar with a shot in the 52nd minute, narrowly missing the breakthrough goal.
  • Rowan took the lead in the 63rd minute, capitalizing off a cross into the box from the far side of the field that found the feet of a midfielder in the box, who maneuvered past the initial defender and flicked a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
  • Montclair tried to answer immediately, as OWEN MURPHY saw his shot attempt saved by Rowan a minute later. The Profs tightened up defensively and almost doubled their lead in the 84th minute, but Velasquez came up with a crucial save to maintain the margin. Rowan hit the crossbar two minutes later, and sealed the road victory with another save late in the contest.
