Football Upended at #9/#9 Salisbury, 44-8

Salisbury, Md. – The Montclair State football team (2-4, 0-2 NJAC) was upended on the road at Salisbury (6-0, 3-0 NJAC), 44-8 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls got the ball first and went right down the field on the first possession with a 10-play, 78-yard drive that was capped off by a five-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
  • After a forced punt, Salisbury started with the ball on their own 45-yard line and generated another touchdown drive of 55 yards on 10 plays and was finished off with a three-yard run. Salisbury missed the extra point and the game was set at 13-0 early in the second quarter.
  • A Red Hawk fumble on the kickoff return, set up the Sea Gulls with excellent field position at the MSU 20. The Montclair defense stood strong though and held Salisbury to a field goal that made the score 16-0.
  • The two teams punted back-and-forth to each other until Salisbury started a drive at their own 48 and drove the ball near the redzone at the Montcalir 29 before ARNOLD YOUNG recovered a fumble and stymied a scoring drive for the Gulls, but the offense could not get those initial points on the board and the game went into halftime at the score of 16-0.
  • The Red Hawks were forced to punt on their first possession and that punt was blocked and gave the Sea Gulls great field possession at the MSU 27, where they delivered on a 27-yard touchdown throw to move the score up to a 23-0 lead. Salisbury extended their lead to 30-0 with 4:28 left to go in the third quarter on a seven-play, 57-yard drive on a 16-yard reception touchdown.
  • Montclair's only scoring drive of the day came right after the previous touchdown drive. The Red Hawks started on their own 25 where AIDAN MCLAUGHLIN connected with AHMIRR ROBINSON for a 10-yard strike, ANTHONY ROIGE for a 24-yard reception and Robinson again for 16 yards to get the ball down to the SU 38. A 2-yard run by DEREK LEIGH and a nine-yard completion to JADEN PEART, set McLaughlin up for an 11-yard touchdown run for their lone touchdown of the game. Montclair attempted a two-point conversion and it was again McLaughlin who ran it in to make the score 30-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Salisbury compiled two more touchdown drives down the stretch to post a 44-8 final on this NJAC contest. The first drive was capped off by 37-yard touchdown throw and the second was finished by a four-yard run.
