#8 Men's Soccer Increases Winning Streak to Seven; Blanks Kean, 2-0

Union, NJ The #8 Montclair State University men's soccer team blanked Kean, 2-0, for its seventh consecutive victory on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (7-2-1, 2-0-0 NJAC) raced out to an early advantage, as OSBIN MENDEZ stepped up and converted his second penalty kick in as many contests in the 15th minute after ANDRE SHELTON was fouled in the box.
  • Montclair tried to double their advantage six minutes later, as REED KARSEN slotted a shot bottom left that was gathered by the Cougars. Kean registered their first chance in the 37th minute, as ALEXANDER VELASQUEZ tallied a save to preserve the lead going into the half.
  • The visitors kicked off the second stanza on the front foot, registering three shots on goal in the opening 12 minutes. The Cougars were assessed a red card three minutes after the offensive barrage, and Montclair capitalized in the 75th minute, as SAMUEL EPITIME played a cross to Shelton, who slotted a goal to double the lead.
  • Montclair looked for the third goal shortly after, as SALEM ELLISY ripped a shot that was saved by Kean. Velasquez tallied another stop in the 81st minute, and Mendez had a shot saved down the stretch as the Red Hawks sealed the shutout victory.

INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Montclair increased its winning streak to seven games with the victory. The Red Hawks have not allowed a goal in 684 minutes dating back to September 6. 
  • Mendez has scored in each of Montclair's last three contests, increasing his season total and new career-high to four. 
  • Shelton notched his second goal of the season and seventh of his Montclair career. Epitime tallied his first assist of the campaign.
  • Velasquez finished with four saves on the night, one off his career-high set on September 1. He recorded his sixth shutout of the season, all coming within Montclair's last seven contests.
  • The Red Hawks outshot the Cougars 17-7 in the contest and held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, along with all seven of the corner kicks taken on the night.

The Red Hawks will return home to host The College of New Jersey on Saturday, October 5. Kickoff from MSU Soccer Park is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
