Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University volleyball team (15-6, 6-1 NJAC) honored their two seniors tonight for Senior Night and earned a 3-0 straight-set victory over Rutgers-Newark (10-14, 1-5 NJAC) on Thursday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Set one started off with a trio of points from the Scarlet Raiders before CAMRYN MUUSS knocked down a kill for the first Red Hawks' point. After a kill from Rutgers-Newark, Montclair put together a 9-2 run to take control of the set with a 10-6 lead. That run saw kills from SOFIA DIPROFIO, RACHEL CURRAN, SARAH CAPONE, and a service ace from EMILY FERRI. Every time Newark put points on the board, Montclair one up'd them and to keep control of the set. At a 19-13 score, the Red Hawks capped off the set with a 6-1 run to take set one, 25-14. Curran led that run with four kills while Capone earned a kill and EMILY CARCICH notched the last point on a service ace.
- The beginning of the second set was nearly identical to the first with Rutgers starting 3-0 before a Muuss kill halted their run. Then, after an attack error, Montclair rattled off five-straight points to take a 6-4 lead that included two service aces by Hatcher and a kill by Muuss. The Scarlet Raiders battled back and took a 9-8 lead, but the Red Hawks put together a massive 12-1 run to take a big 20-10 advantage. That run was sparked by three Curran kills, a kill from Capone, a kill from Muuss and two blocks from Capone and DiProfio. After a Rutgers-Newark kill, Montclair scored five of the next six points to earn a 25-12 set-two victory. KATIE RODMAN tallied a service ace while Capone earned a kill and a block along with DiProfio.
- It was Montclair who started off strong in the third set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead with two service aces from Rodman and a kill from Muuss. The two teams battled back-and-forth up to a 10-6 MSU advantage. The Scarlet Raiders collected three points that was answered by a pair form the Red Hawks and then the Scarlet Raiders tied the contest up with another trio of points to nod the set up 12-12. The Red Hawks climbed up to a 18-16 edge before they finished off the Scarlet Raiders with a 7-1 run to clinch the straight-set win with a set-three triumph of 25-17. That final run saw kills from Curran and Capone and blocks from Curran and DiProfio.
Inside the Numbers
- Montclair moved their win-streak to seven matches and currently sit as they number one team in the NJAC
- Curran led the way in kills and digs tonight, recording 13 of each stat.
- The Red Hawks also saw season-highs in blocks from both DiProfio and Capone, who each recorded five apiece.
- Before the match, the Montclair State University volleyball program honored their two seniors KATIE RODMAN and RACHEL CURRAN before the match tonight.

Montclair State heads to Center Valley, Pa. for a tri-match against Hunter College and host DeSales on Saturday, October 26. They will face Hunter at 1:00pm followed by DeSales at 3:00pm.
