Field Hockey Opens NJAC Play With 3-0 Victory Over William Paterson

Wayne, NJ The Montclair State University field hockey team surged past William Paterson, 3-0, to open New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (8-3, 1-0 NJAC) opened the scoring on the second shot of the game in the sixth minute, as GAB MAISTO knocked the ball loose, surged pass midfield, and slipped a long pass that found the stick of ALEXA ANTONELLI, who turned and flicked a low shot into the bottom right corner of the cage.
  • After SYDNEY WHITE came up with a stop on the first shot of the night four minutes later, the Red Hawks doubled their advantage in the waning moments of the opening stanza. BELLA HEISER sent the ball towards the cage following a penalty corner from NATALIE SURMA, which found the stick of TORI SUTERA. The senior flicked the ball across the cage to MARISSA CRAIG, who guided a shot into the back of the cage.
  • The Red Hawks opened the second quarter with three shots in the first five minutes, and maintained the offensive push throughout the frame. In the final seconds of the half, KASEY WATSON played a penalty corner to SADIE EICHLIN, who slid the ball to Maisto. The senior sent the ball towards the cage, but it rang off the post to end the half.
  • Montclair continued its defensive push into the third stanza, as it did not allow a shot for the full 15 minutes. The Red Hawks outshot the Pioneers 6-0 over the entire second half, and found their third goal in the 59th minute. Heiser played a pass in from the near side of the field to SAMI BLOOM, who immediately connected a cross towards the far side of the cage for a shot from DARBY VON BERG.
