Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Old Westbury, 84-27

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SHANNON HUGHES opened up the scoring with a three-point ball just 33 seconds into the contest. A defensive battle ensued until four minutes in the Panthers found a pair of buckets to take a 4-3 lead. It was there only lead of the game however as the Red Hawks fired back with a three pointer from ISABELLA ORLANDO and a converted and-one from OLIVIA VERO that put the Red Hawks up 9-4. After Panthers layup, the Red Hawks scored 10 straight points to close out the first period with a 19-6 lead. Vero and ALYSSA CRAIGWELL each found a pair of layups while BRIANNA MONTAJES had the final field goal of the period.
  • Vero notched the first bucket of the second period with a putback layup just under a minute and a half in and was eventually followed by a steal from AMANDA CASTRO, who hit Montajes on a fast break for a 23-6 with 7:03 left in the half. After two good free throws from Vero, Old Westbury put in their first bucket of the quarter, but was immediately followed by a fast break layup from Craigwell. The Panthers notched another point on a made free throw, but the Red Hawks scored eight unanswered to jump out to a 36-9 advantage. The charity strike was big on that run for Montclair, who saw five of the eight points from made free throws. The Red Hawks eventually took a 43-14 lead into the half.
  • The third period started just the same as the first with Hughes connecting on a three-point shot and was followed by a Vero layup to move the score to 48-14. Both teams exchanged four points before Montclair closed out the third with a 13-2 run for a 65-20 lead heading into the final quarter of play. LYNDSEY ROSS and AMANDA CASTRO each saw four points in that run while ALEXIS STROLLO converted a made layup and Samantha Phillip knocked down a three pointer
  • The Red Hawks opened the fourth period with five points on a three-point ball from KRISTINA TURNER and two made free throws from Orlando. Westbury converted a layup at the 6:46 mark that was answered with eight unanswered points from Montclair, six of which came from Ross. In the final two and half minutes of the game, the Panthers converted a three pointer and a jumper while the Red Hawks saw good layups from Ross, SALANGE BELL and Turner to close out the 84-27 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Vero once again led the way with another double-double. This time of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Her two double-doubles to start the season has matched her career total of two that she had in her career heading into this season.
  • The Red Hawks also saw double-digit scoring efforts from Ross who scored 12 on the night with Hughes and Craigwell, who each had 10. Montclair saw 12 of their 15 players convert a basket tonight
  • Of the 84 points on the night, 54 were converted in the paint and 38 were scored off of turnovers. The Red Hawks notched 15 steals tonight with Craigwell leading the way with four.
  • This win margin of 57 was the largest they've had since 2021 when the Red Hawks defeated Penn State Abington by 60 with a score of 90-30.
