Field Hockey Falls in Overtime to TCNJ in NJAC Tournament Semifinals

Ewing, NJ The third-seeded Montclair State University field hockey team fell to the second-seeded TCNJ, 2-1, in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in the 2024 New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (13-6) battled the Lions in a tightly-contested opening stanza that saw zero shots over the first 10 minutes of play. Shortly after, TCNJ slotted a shot on goal off a penalty corner that was stopped by SYDNEY WHITE. Montclair stood strong defensively on another corner attempt 30 seconds later, as both sides ended the first 15 scoreless.
  • TCNJ broke the scoring open in the 19th minute, as they capitalized on a loose ball in front of the cage after White notched a save on a penalty corner shot attempt. The Red Hawks could not find the equalizer over the remainder of the half as the home side took the one goal advantage into the break.
  • Montclair began to push offensively in the latter stages of the third quarter, as JOEY MAYER saw a shot attempt saved by TCNJ in the 41st minute. With 70 seconds on the clock, ALEXA ANTONELLI ripped a shot into the back of the cage to level the contest at one going into the final frame.
  • The Lions looked to regain the advantage in the fourth, recording four shots over a two-minute span early in the stanza. White tallied two stops during that stretch, and came up with another key save shortly after. NATALIE SURMA saw a shot blocked late in the game, as the two sides finished regulation level at one.
  • TCNJ opened the overtime period with the first four shots, and came up with a stop on a penalty stroke from Montclair three minutes in to keep the game going. The Lions found the game-winner in the final minute to advance in the tournament.
