Football Defeated by Christopher Newport on Senior Day, 33-10

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team (3-4, 1-2 NJAC) honored their largest senior class in program history of 41 student-athletes before they were defeated in their final home game of 2024 to NJAC foe Christopher Newport (6-3, 4-1 NJAC), 33-10 on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Red Hawks won the coin toss and deferred to the second half giving the Captains the ball first. A three-and-out gave Montclair the ball with their opening possession at their own 47. What also looked three-an-out, this time for the Red Hawks, brought trickery as a fake punt from Montclair extended the drive as MICHAEL FITZPATRICK took the long snaps and hit ADONIS MAY, who pushed a pile of people for a first down. Montclair ultimately set themselves up for a field goal attempt from 42-yards out, GREG CASIMIR's kick faded left and the game remained scoreless.
  • Right after the Casimir miss, CNU put together an 11-play, 58-yard drive to give their kicker Maxx Lawton a 35-yard attempt that he drilled to draw first blood, 3-0
  •  The game went into a defensive battle with each team forcing a pair of punts. The Red Hawks were putting together a good drive, but were eventually stalled at the CNU 39 on fourth and three at the 5:53 timestamp in the second quarter. The opening play saw CNU quarterback Connor Barry hit wide receiver Colin Hart for a 40-yard completion to set them up at the MSU 21. They eventually punched in a one-yard touchdown and took a 9-0 lead after a missed extra point.
  • With 2:30 on the clock, Montclair had one drive left to get some points on the board before halftime. After an opening incompletion, AIDAN MCLAUGHLIN hit his favorite target ANTHONY ROIGE for a 32-yard bullet to get the ball out to the CNU 44. After a pass interference on the Red Hawks pushed the ball back to their own 41, MASON MURDOCK found JAMIE HAMILTON for 20 yards and then Murdock used his legs to pick up the first down and extend the drive. The Red Hawks eventually got to the Christopher Newport 31-yard line and set Casimir up for another long field goal of 48 yards. He drilled it and made the score 9-3 going into halftime.
  • Montclair could not capitalize on getting the ball to start the second half and punted the ball away. Gains of 18 and 30 and a roughing the passer call after the 30-yard play gave Christopher Newport great field position at the MSU 17. The Red Hawks defense held them out of the endzone however and the Captains settled for a 34-yard field goal to make the score 12-3 with 8:17 left in the half.
  • The Red Hawks had to punt the ball back to the Captains next possession. The MSU defense pushed back the CNU offense into a 2nd and 32 situation after a MOHAMMAD ABEDRABO and NICHOLAS BURGESS shared sack and a unnecessary roughing penalty after the play, but a 50/50 ball was one by Captain wide receiver Trey Hayes, who then proceeded to make a few defenders miss on his way to a 59-yard touchdown to extend the Christopher Newport lead to 19-3.
  • Christopher Newport immediately got the ball back on a muffed kickoff fair catch, but turned the ball over on downs at the Montclair 29. The Red Hawks once again immediately gave the ball back when Murdock's pass intended for AHMIRR ROBINSON was intercepted by Noah Martin and led to an 11-play, 55-yard drive the was capped off with a four-yard run to widen the score to 26-3.
  • A nice return of 27-yards from SAMAAD HICKS set the Red Hawks up with the ball at their own 45. On the first play, Murdock found MAKAI MICKENS for a 30-yard catch and run into CNU territory. After two plays, Murdock threw a beautiful ball into the endzone that connected with Mickens for 24-yard score and cut the lead to 26-10.
  • The Captains put together one last scoring drive with an eight-play, 51 yard drive that was capped off by a 15-yard scamper by Jordin Lennon and finished off the game with a 33-10 victory for Christopher Newport.

  • May tied his career-best with nine total tackles that included a career high 2.5 tackles for loss
  • Murdock and Mickens connected for their first touchdowns of the season
FROM THE FIELD

"Christopher Newport is a very good team. They really played well in the second half. This one hurts because I wanted to send the seniors out with a win at home. I'm am thankful we still have one more game to play to finish on a high note." - Head Coach Mike Palazzo
