Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight; Downs Delaware Valley, 65-48

Doylestown, PA- The Montclair State University Women's Basketball team (8-2) earned their fourth-straight victory on Tuesday night as they downed Delaware Valley (2-9), 65-48.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • SOPHIE BENEVENTINE collected the tip-off and found BRIANNA MONTAJES for a quick layup to spark an 8-2 opening run for the Red Hawks in the first quarter. After the Aggies converted two free throws, the Red Hawks saw ALYSSA CRAIGWELL score and OLIVIA VERO score a layup and two free throws to take a 16-6 advantage halfway through the period. Delaware Valley outscored Montclair down the stretch 8-6 but the early lead gave the Red Hawks a 21-14 lead heading into the second.
  • Delaware Valley climbed to down four (24-20) in the first minute and a half of the second quarter, but were shut down the rest of the half by the Montclair defense, which did not allow a point the rest of the quarter while scoring 14 of their own to take command, 38-20 heading into the second half. Craigwell accounted for half of the points in that run with seven.
  • The Aggies opened up the third quarter with two buckets but were answered by two good jumpers from Craigwell and DAJA WENTZ. Both teams battled back and forth with no team able to generate a true run up to a 52-36 lead for the Red Hawks with 2:14 remaining in the period. Montclair closed the quarter out with a 7-1 run on layups from Craigwell and Vero and a three-point ball from ALEXIS STROLLO to give the Red Hawks a 59-37 edge heading into the final frame.
  • Defense held strong for the most part in the final quarter, only seeing 17 total points in the period. Delaware Valley created a short 6-2 run in the first three minutes of the contest which was halted by layups from MALVINA SULLIVAN and Montajes that kept the run small and reserved the advantage. The Aggies saw the final six points of the contest in the last two minutes but the lead was insurmountable and the Red Hawks came away with a 65-48 road victory.
