Men's Basketball Outlasts Rowan In Double Overtime

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University men's basketball team outlasted Rowan University 113-110 in double overtime on Wednesday evening.

The Red Hawks (17-8, 12-6 NJAC) clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both sides traded baskets early as the game was knotted at 16 just 5:05 into the contest. A KEYON PRYCE triple pushed Montclair in front 19-18, but the guests used a 10-1 spurt to go up 28-20 with just under 11 minutes to go in the first period.
  • Rowan stretched the gap to double-digits midway through the frame before an AMARI MILLS three-pointer, but the margin went back to six. The Profs reeled off five straight points late in the half and went up 15 with 57 ticks left.
  • Pryce hit a layup with 10 seconds remaining to make the score 50-37 Rowan at the break, with both sides shooting over 48% from the floor.
  • Montclair quickly reeled off seven markers early in the second as Rowan called a timeout after a triple from SAMAR ABDULLAH. The Profs clung to an eight-point advantage before a 7-0 run, capped off by a three from MIKE JACKSON, shrunk the score to 61-60.
  • The Red Hawks pulled back in front by six on consecutive layups from Pryce and KIERAN FLANAGAN before a FRANCISCO PAULINO layup made it 81-75 Montclair. The Profs cut the score in half with 4:01 left, but two free throws from Flanagan pushed the hosts up by seven with 1:55 remaining.
  • The Profs were able to force overtime on consecutive three-pointers, including one with 25 seconds left to tie things at 93. Montclair had a chance to tie, but the try did not fall.
  • The see-saw battle waged on in overtime, with neither side going up by more than three. The Red Hawks led by two with 15 seconds to go, but a layup with seven seconds left evened the game at 103, extending it to a second extra session.
  • Flanagan gave the Red Hawks the lead for good with 35 seconds to go, hitting a layup. Pryce came up with a steal on the ensuing Profs possession and sunk two from the line. Rowan had a look to tie it, but the shot went off the rim, and Jackson snared the rebound for the win.

FROM THE COURT
"Another great environment in Panzer.  Thank you to all the fans that showed support.  Especially all the former players. Resilient effort by our guys. Thought they did a great job of competing and really played with a ton of pride in second half and several guys stepped up in big moments and we just kept battling and found a way." - Head Coach Justin Potts.
