Women's Basketball Hangs On, Takes Down Rowan 66-60

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball team held off Rowan University 66-62 on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (9-16, 6-12NJAC) opened up an early advantage on layups from TERESA WOLAK and OLIVIA VERO. After Rowan cut the score to 6-5 with 5:31 remaining in the first, Montclair rattled off 10 straight points to open an 11-point lead with two minutes on the clock and held the lead at that mark after one-quarter of play.
  • After Vero converted a layup to make the score 20-7 to start the second quarter, the Profs responded with seven straight points over the next 90 seconds to cut the deficit to six.
  • Montclair pushed the lead back to nine with 5:35 remaining in the half on back-to-back three-point shots from ISABELLA ORLANDO. Rowan couldn't get within two possessions until the final minute when they scored the final five points to make the halftime score 35-32.
  • The Profs took their first lead of the contest with 6:37 remaining in the third quarter. Montclair immediately connected on a three-point shot from SHANNON HUGHES to reclaim the advantage. 
  • Montclair pushed the lead to seven on a layup from Hughes with three and a half minutes in the third. Rowan bounced back with a layup, but the Red Hawks struck for the final seven points of the frame to go up by 12.
  • The lead grew to 15 midway through the fourth quarter before a 10-2 Rowan spurt whittled the gap to eight. BRIANNA MONTAJES stopped the run with a free throw, which was answered by a Rowan triple.
  • Orlando hit three free throws in the final minute before the Profs finished the game off with a three-pointer from half court to finalize the score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Montajes led the Red Hawks with 14 points off the bench and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
  • Vero missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. The junior added three assists and two steals.
  • The 17 made free throws were off the season high, set against Hunter and Stockton.
