Men's Lacrosse Defeats Penn College in Season Opener

Williamsport, PA The Montclair State University men's lacrosse team topped Penn College 16-6 in their 2024 season opener on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (1-0) scored on their first shot of the season as BRANDON LEWANDOWSKI found the back of the net 78 seconds into the contest. After OWEN TORREY collected two saves, ETHAN MOUNIER doubled the Montclair advantage.
  • RYAN VIERBUCHEN scored at the 8:07 mark of the first and later assisted a goal from JOHN CRANK to continue the hot start for the Red Hawks. The Wildcats struck for the final marker of the quarter to make the score 4-1 after 15 minutes of play.
  • Montclair put together a flurry of goals over a two minute stretch early in the second stanza. After Vierbuchen put in his second, Cleary scored off a feed from Crank, and AIDAN MAXWELL found the back of the net. Vierbuchen capped off the run to make the score 8-1 with nine minutes remaining in the half.
  • After Penn College got their second of the contest, Crank's second marker of the half made the score 9-2 going into the break.
  • DAVID DRISCOLL scored off the faceoff five seconds into the third quarter, but the Wildcats strung two goals together to make the deficit six after five minutes of the third frame. Crank responded a few minutes later on a feed from Cleary, and Vierbuchen put in his fourth of the afternoon to put Montclair up eight after 30 minutes of play.
  • Following a scoreless opening five minutes to the fourth, the visitors rattled off two goals in 34 seconds to balloon the advantage to double digits. Vierbuchen and Crank added one more each to make the score 16-4.
  • The Wildcats scored twice in the final two minutes, but Montclair held off the late push for the season opening victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Vierbuchen finished with a game-high five goals, one off his career-high of six. Crank's four goals set a new career-high.
  • Cleary tallied six assists in the contest to set a new career-high, surpassing his previous mark of two.
  • Torrey tallied 12 saves in his first career start for the Red Hawks.
  • Montclair has won its season opener in back-to-back seasons and three of its last five campaigns.
