Softball Blanks Saint Mary's, Farmingdale State

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Montclair State University softball team picked up victories on the second of their Florida trip on Monday.
 
The Red Hawks (2-2) blanked Saint Mary's (IN) 8-0 in six innings and Farmingdale State 1-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After two scoreless innings against Saint Mary's, the Red Hawks broke through for two in the third. MARIAH CARRASCO walked to lead off, and MADISON LEECH singled. The runners moved up on a sacrifice from RILEIGH GLYNN before LIZ MULLEN smoked a two-out, two-run triple.
  • Leech added an RBI single in the fourth before Montclair broke the game open with four in the fifth. Consecutive singles from KAYLA COSENTINO and Mullen led off the frame, and after a flyout, KATIE BRUNNER smacked a double that scored two. FAITH COLLIER came off the bench for a pinch-hit RBI, and Carrasco capped the scoring off with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Red Hawks completed in the sixth, as Glynn reached on an error and scored on an error that was hit by Cosentino. Staked to the 8-0 STEPHANIE SERETIS got out of the sixth by snaring a liner and doubling up a runner off second base to end game one.
  • Montclair scored the lone run of the contest against Farmingdale in the top of the first. Cosentino singled to left with one out and was brought home on a double to right-center by MOLLY COLLIGAN.
  • ALI CAVALLARO got out of the third with a double-play, and Brunner gunned out a runner trying to swipe second in the fourth. With a runner on second in the sixth, Cavallaro notched a swinging strikeout to strand the runner.
  • Leading 1-0 in the seventh, Cavallaro made quick of the Rams, setting the side down in order to close out the victory.
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • BROOKE BIAMONTE earned the win, tossing three shutout innings. Seretis finished the game with the final three frames, striking out two.
  • Cosentino, Mullen, Brunner, and Leech registered two hits, while Carrasco drew a pair of walks.
  • Glynn went 2-for-3 in the nightcap, with Colligan notching the lone extra-base hit.
  • Cavallaro went the distance and struck out three while surrendering five hits and two walks.

"It was great to get out on the field. We had a lot of good defensive plays and the pitchers threw phenomenal. We need to do a better job making adjustments at the plate. It was a great start to a promising year." - Interim Head Coach Nicole Degenhardt.
