Softball Topped By Springfield, North Central

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Montclair State University softball team dropped a pair of games on their fourth day of The Spring Games on Thursday.

The Red Hawks were topped by Springfield College 7-1 and fell 3-2 against North Central College in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second before tacking on three more in the fourth. MADISON LEECH and KAYLA COSENTINO led off with singles in the fourth and moved up a base on a LIZ MULLEN sacrifice bunt. KATIE BRUNNER brought a runner home on a sacrifice fly, but Montclair didn't get any more across.
  • Springfield capped off the scoring in the fifth, pushing across three runs. Montclair threatened in the sixth, as RILEIGH GLYNN and Leech led off with walks. They were stranded on base, with the final two hitters being set down.
  • Montclair opened the scoring in the first inning, as Leech and Cosentino registered one-out singles, and Leech scored on a single back through the box by Brunner. The Cardinals answered in their first at-bat, scoring on a fly ball to left.
  • The Red Hawks took a 2-1 advantage in the second, as singles from Mullen and JULIANA CASILLAS led off the frame. NOELLE WOOD dropped a bunt down, and a throwing error allowed Mullen to scoot home from second.
  • Montclair looked to add in the third, but Brunner was gunned out at the plate trying to score on a double from MOLLY COLLIGAN. The Red Hawks turned a double-play in the fifth, as Colligan caught a bunt and doubled the runner off first base.
  • The Cardinals came away with the victory as they scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. They evened the game on an error with two outs before the following hitter singled through the left side.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SAGE RIZZI fanned three in four innings of work against Springfield, with BROOKE BIAMONTE notching one.
  • Leech was the lone Red Hawk to get on base twice, working a walk and singling.
  • Casillas collected two hits in the nightcap, with Brunner walking and singling.
  • ALI CAVALLARO went the distance, striking out two in 6 2/3. She allowed three runs, with none earned.
FROM THE FIELD
"Tough losses today. The team continues to play hard and still trying to make adjustments at the plate.  Ali and Sage continue to throw amazing. We need to reset and come back tomorrow strong." Interim Head Coach Nicole Degenhardt.
