Lancaster, Pa. – The Montclair State volleyball team dropped both of their contests today against Virginia Wesleyan and Franklin & Marshall, 3-1 and 3-0, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Virginia Wesleyan scored the first point of the match, but three unanswered points from Montclair, including a service ace from RACHEL CURRAN, gave the Red Hawks a 3-1. The closest shot the Marlins had to a comeback late was on three straight points that cut the lead to 21-19, but a pair of attack errors kept the score at a comfortable 23-19 lead for the Montclair who eventually took set one, 25-21.
- A back-and-forth beginning to set two saw a 3-3 tie before VW went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-3 lead. Montclair tried to climb back, eventually cutting the score to 11-7, but a massive 11-1 run from Virginia Wesleyan gave themselves a massive 22-8. The Marlins took set two with a score of 25-12.
- The Marlins jumped out to a 6-1 advantage early in the third set before a kill from Camryn Muss shut down the run. At a score of 10-5 VW, they went on another big run of 7-1 to take a commanding 17-6 edge. The Red Hawks pushed back with a 4-1 run that included two service aces from GABBY KONRAD and kills from BRYN BAUTISTA and KASEY TRZASKA. Montclair fought back with a 4-1 run of their own but the set was sealed with a service ace and a kill that put the Marlins in position to win the match with a set three win of 25-15.
- Set four was as competitive as they come, with three lead changes and three tied scored up to a 9-7 Montclair lead. Virginia Wesleyan scored four straight points to retake the lead, but Montclair answered with five points of their own that included two kills from Bautista and one from SOFIA DIPROFIO to take a 14-11 lead. A 10-3 run from the Marlins gave them a 21-17 edge. The Red Hawks clawed back to within one on kills from MIA CAPRIGLIONE, Bautista and DiProfio, but were unable to find a run to swing the match back in their favor as both teams exchanged a point a piece that eventually clinched the match for the Marlins at a set four score of 25-23.
- Against Franklin & Marshall, the first set was competitive at the beginning with no team able to find a true lead. The Red Hawks got to within one during a 4-1 run that included kills from Curran and Lilly Thomas, but service error shut down a tie point opportunity. Montclair played to a score of 21-19 Franklin & Marshall before the Diplomats scored four unanswered to take set one, 25-19.
- After a 2-0 Diplomats lead, Montclair created a big run of 7-1 to hold a 7-3 lead. That run included kills from Curran, Bautista, Thomas and SARAH CAPONE.
