Volleyball Defeats Wentworth, 3-2, in Five Set Thriller

Hoboken, NJ The Montclair State University volleyball team took down the Wentworth Institute of Technology in five sets to conclude its multi-day quad match on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (8-5) started the match strong with five of the first six points, led by RACHEL CURRAN, who notched a kill and an ace. Wentworth knotted the score at five, but Montclair answered with a 6-1 run headlined by back-to-back kills from CAMRYN MUUSS. The Leopards worked their way back into the set, tying it at 21 late. The Red Hawks tallied the final four points of the frame, as Muuss kicked off the run with a kill, with ZOEY HORN notching one the next point. After a BRYN BAUTISTA ace, Horn finished off the set with another kill.
  • Montclair jumped out to a six-point advantage in the second stanza, as Muuss and LILY THOMAS each recorded two kills. Wentworth went on an extended 8-3 run to cut the margin to one in favor of the Red Hawks, but two kills from Curran and an attack error pushed it back to four. The Leopards responded with six-straight to take the lead, but Montclair closed the set with 11 of the final 15 points to take a two-set lead in the match.
  • Wentworth took an early 4-3 lead in the third frame and expanded their advantage with 11 of the next 13 points. The Leopards rattled off five more following an attack error to push the lead to 20-6. Muuss notched two kills as part of a 5-2 stretch to cut into the deficit, but Wentworth answered with a run of their own to take the third set.
  • Curran tallied a kill off a feed from EMILY CARCICH to give Montclair an early 6-5 lead in the fourth, but the Leopards tallied the next 15 points to build a 14-point advantage. Horn recorded a kill to stop the run, but Wentworth strung together five of the final six points of the set to force a decisive final stanza.
  • Trailing by two in the fifth, Horn and Thomas tallied back-to-back kills to level the score at eight. Wentworth reclaimed the lead the next point, but fell behind again on consecutive attack errors. Level at 10, Bautista and Muuss notched kills, along with a bad set from Wentworth, to put the Red Hawks up three. The Leopards cut the deficit to 14-13, but SARAH CAPONE finished the match with a kill.

FROM THE COURT

"We had some fatigue coming into this game. We played a solid first and second set. Our passing broke down in set three and four which hurt our offensive production. We played a solid fifth set from start to finish. Proud of our effort this weekend, and especially in this match after playing a tough five set match last night. We played some tough opponents and battled every step of the way." - Head Coach Eduardo Stawinski
