Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#20 Men's Soccer Blanks William Paterson, 2-0

Montclair, NJ The #20 Montclair State University men's soccer team blanked William Paterson 2-0 for its fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday night at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (11-1-2, 4-1-0 NJAC) notched the first shot attempt of the night in the second minute, as SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI fired an attempt towards the top right of the frame. The Pioneers notched their first shot in the 11th minute before Montclair broke the scoring open 11 minutes later. DANNY TOBON dispossessed a Pioneers defender on the far touchline, made a run into the box and towards the end line, and slipped a feed to KEVIN CONTRERAS, who sent a left-footed shot into the top portion of goal.
  • Montclair searched for their second of the night for the remainder of the half, tallying three consecutive shots over the next 20 minutes. William Paterson recorded their first shot on goal in the 41st minute, but PIERRE SOUMEILLANT came up with a save in the bottom right corner of the frame. Neither side would allow an attempt the remainder of the half, as the Red Hawks went into the break up one.
  • Coming out of half, Montclair rattled off four shots in the first 10 minutes, including attempts on goal by Tobon and JACKSON PERATA. After the Pioneers countered with a shot of their own, the Red Hawks amassed four more shots as KENET LOPEZ tried to slot a ball to the bottom right of goal that was collected by the keeper.
  • In the 77th minute, the Red Hawks doubled their advantage, as JOSH VIRGIL wove through defenders and floated towards the end line. The midfielder tucked a centering pass to a cutting LOGAN NENO, who immediately flicked the ball over the head of the keeper. Defensively, Montclair allowed just one shot over the remaining 13 minutes to seal their fifth consecutive victory, including fourth within New Jersey Athletic Conference play.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • The goal for Contreras was his second in as many games and fourth of the campaign. He leads the team with three game-winning goals. Tobon's assist marked his third of the year and second consecutive goal contribution.
  • Neno notched his second goal of the year, with Virgil moving into second on the team in assists with his fourth.

  • The Red Hawks outshot the Pioneers 16-7 for the night, holding a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Montclair's five-game winning streak is its largest of the season, moving into sole possession of first place in the NJAC with the victory.
