Union, NJ – The Montclair State University women's soccer team (6-0-3, 2-0-0 NJAC) went on the road for New Jersey Athletic Conference play at Kean (4-4-1, 0-2-0 NJAC) and routed the Cougars, 5-1 on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams saw a fast volley of goals in the first 10 minutes of the match. Just a few seconds into the 4th minute, SAMIRA LUKOVIC collected a ball off a team save and put a shot in for the lead. Kean answered similarly in the seventh minute, collecting a save from SALANGE BELL and putting the ball past her for a 1-1 tie.
- The Red Hawk defense tightened up and did not allow a shot the rest of the half. They took to the attack and got one to fall at the 20:19 timestamp when MACKENZIE ALBERT found SHANNON MULLINS for the go-ahead goal that eventually turned into the game-winner. The score went 2-1 going into halftime.
- The second half started with Montclair dominating the offensive possession. They saw eight shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but were unable to see one fall, until ISABELL KRONOW buried one in the 67th minute to extend the lead to 3-1.
- Mullins found her second goal of the contest at the 78:37 timestamp, this time off an assist from EMMA EDWARDS that pushed the Red Hawk lead out to 4-1.
- Kean continued to be on its heels by a relentless Montclair attack for almost all of the rest of the way, seeing only one shot that was saved by Bell. MADELINE LESICA put the exclamation point on the win in the 87th minute with an assist from LAUREN HUTCHISON, and Montclair left Union, NJ, with an emphatic 5-1 victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
- Montclair's offense was a machine tonight. They totaled 41 shots (18 shots on goal), which is the third-highest single-game total in school history and the most since 2014.
- Mullins had the first multi-goal game of her Montclair career.
- Bell secured the win and made five saves along the way.
- The Red Hawks continue to have their way against the Cougars. They extended their win streak to eight, unbeaten streak to 17, and tied the most goals they've ever scored against Kean, a mark they've achieved twice before (2020, 2021).
