Schenectady, NY – The Montclair State University field hockey team was edged by Union College 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Hawks (4-10) withstood some early threats from Union, as SYDNEY WHITE parried away a pair of shot attempts in the opening two minutes. Union notched three more shots over the next five minutes, with White picking up another save to maintain the margin. Shortly after, SADIE EICHLIN registered Montclair's first shot of the day on a penalty corner, but Union took the lead on a corner of their own in the waning moments of the opening stanza.
- Union opened the second quarter with two more shots on target that White pushed away, with neither side registering another attempt until there was almost two and a half minutes on the clock. ANNA DONALDSON played in a pass off a penalty corner to SADIE EICHLIN, who arced a shot over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the cage to equalize the contest. White recorded two more crucial saves to keep the sides level at the halftime break.
- White stopped the home side once again in the beginning moments of the third frame, as the Red Hawks searched for the go-ahead goal over the next few minutes. KELLY WESTERVELT saw a shot attempt blocked, but BELLA HEISER collected the loose ball and sent in a shot on target that had to be parried away by Union. The home side regained the lead within the minute, as a centering pass from the end line was put into the back of the cage. Neither side saw a shot the rest of the quarter, as Union went into the final period up one.
- Union kicked off the final quarter with another shot on target that White stopped, as the Montclair goalkeeper came up huge with a save on a penalty stroke attempt with just over 10 minutes remaining. The Garnet Chargers recorded three more attempts on goal, but White came up with stops on all three. Montclair could not find the equalizer down the stretch as Union sealed the home victory.
