Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Earns Road Victory Over TCNJ, 2-1

Ewing, NJ The Montclair State University men's soccer team took down The College of New Jersey 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (8-1-2, 2-1-0 NJAC) rattled off a pair of shots in the opening eight minutes, as KEVIN CONTRERAS and Jermias Montero each saw attempts go just past the frame. Montero tallied the first shot on goal in the 18th minute that had to be saved top right by the TCNJ keeper.
  • The Lions recorded their first shot of the afternoon in the 34th minute on an attempt that was collected by PIERRE SOUMEILLANT. Montclair took the lead five minutes later, as KYLE MOORE collected the ball on the near touchline towards the corner flag and served in a right-footed ball that was flicked with a header by the keeper to the far post by TOMAS MONTEIRO
  • Contreras and CHRIS FONTANAZZA registered shots on goal early in the second stanza, and Montclair would double their advantage in the 60th minute. After Contreras was taken down in the box, SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI stepped up and ripped a penalty kick attempt past the keeper, slotted to the low right post.
  • TCNJ cut the deficit in half in the 80th minute on a shot from the far edge of the box that took a deflection and looped into the net. Montclair pushed late to try and double its lead, outshooting the Lions 5-1 over the final stretch of the day to seal the road victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Monteiro's goal was his fourth of the season, ranking second on the team. He has scored three times over Montclair's last two contests. The assist for Moore marked the first of his collegiate career.
  • Lapczynski's goal was the second of the campaign, improving to two-for-two from the penalty spot, both being game-winners.
  • Soumeillant notched a save in net, making his second consecutive appearance.
  • Offensively, Montclair held a 20-8 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 mark on goal.
FROM THE FIELD

"I was happy with how the team played today. It's never easy to win on the road in the NJAC. We need to continue bringing a strong effort each game, especially as the games become more important later in the season." - Head Coach Todd Tumelty
