Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team (4-7, 2-0 NJAC) dominated from start to finish in a 4-0 shutout victory over William Paterson University (2-8, 0-1 NJAC) on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

HOW IT HAPPENED

•  The Red Hawks wasted no time asserting control, scoring three times in the opening nine minutes of play. Senior midfielder NATALIE SURMA set the tone just 85 seconds into the match with an unassisted goal, then added her second less than four minutes later off a well-placed pass from EMMA BIANCO. Moments later, COLLEEN MCGAVIN pushed the lead to 3-0, capitalizing on sustained offensive pressure that kept the Pioneers pinned deep in their defensive zone. Montclair outshot William Paterson 12-1 in the first quarter, generating seven penalty corners and forcing the WPU goalkeeper into seven early saves.
• The Red Hawks extended their advantage in the second quarter when Bianco found the back of the cage off an assist from KELLY WESTERVELT at the 18:30 mark, making it 4-0.
• Although the second half went scoreless, Montclair continued to control possession, outshooting the Pioneers 9-2 over the final 30 minutes to secure their second shutout of the season and first since August 29.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Surma led the offense with two goals, while Bianco added a goal and an assist.
• The Red Hawks outshot the Pioneers 24-4 and held a 16-2 advantage in penalty corners.
• Goalkeepers SYDNEY WHITE and MANI'A LACY split time in the cage. White played the first half and made two saves, while Lacy handled the second half in her collegiate debut.
