Mahwah, NJ – The Montclair State University women's basketball team powered past Ramapo 70-48 on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Hawks (6-1, 3-1 NJAC) opened the contest with buckets from SAMANTHA PHILIPP and ALYSSA CRAIGWELL to take an early 4-2 advantage in the first two minutes. Ramapo countered with a 7-1 scoring run over the next four minutes to climb ahead by two possessions. Montclair ended the stanza with the final eight points, a run kicked off by a pair of free throws from Philipp and a jumper from MALVINA SULLIVAN over back-to-back trips up the floor. BELLA BRUCE ended the period with a driving layup in the waning moments to give the Red Hawks a 13-9 lead after 10 minutes.
- Montclair continued the offensive surge into the second quarter, as ISABELLA ORLANDO converted an and-one opportunity after the two sides battled to a scoreless opening three minutes. Philipp connected on a shot from beyond the arc on the next possession to push the lead to double-digits, as Craigwell forced a turnover on the other end leading to another converted and-one chance for the visitors. Bruce notched a layup with 2:55 on the clock to push Montclair ahead by 20, with them extending as far as 24 shortly after. Ramapo ended the 20-0 run the Red Hawks opened the period with with a minute remaining in the half, cutting the margin to 20 at the break.
- The Roadrunners trimmed into the deficit in the first three and a half minutes of the third quarter, recording eight of the first 12 points to cut the Montclair lead to 16. KRISTINA TURNER hit a three-point shot on the ensuing possession to answer, as the two sides continued to trade buckets during the stanza. Ramapo got within 16 twice in the final minute of the third, but the Red Hawks notched the final marker of the quarter as Craigwell found Strollo for a three-pointer as time expired.
- Strollo and Philipp each converted a long distance shot in the early moments of the fourth quarter to vault Montclair ahead 55-32 at the 7:48 mark. After back-to-back buckets from Ramapo, threes from Orlando and CELINA BUSSANICH pushed the Red Hawks out by 26 at the halfway point of the period. The Roadrunners collected 10 of the final 16 points of the night to make the final margin 22, sealing the road victory for Montclair.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
- Craigwell led the way for the Red Hawks with 14 points, her seventh double-digit game of the campaign. The sophomore added nine boards, her third-straight appearance with at least nine rebounds.
- Philipp notched her second-straight double-digit performance, finishing the night with 13 points on three makes from beyond the arc.
- Montclair has recorded 70-plus points in back-to-back contests, surpassing the mark for the third time overall this season.
- The Red Hawks have won their last two games by a combined 52 points. Montclair has opened the campaign with wins in six of their first seven games for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
