How It Happened
- The Red Hawks went on the attack early with a 7-0 start in just over the first two minutes of the contest. Four different Red Hawks contributed to points in that run. The Scarlet Raiders scored four of the next six points, but allowed Montclair to generate a 13-2 run that was led by Philipp, who scored six points. Rutgers notched a pair of free throws at the end of the frame, and the score was 22-8 at the end of one.
- Newark kicked off the second quarter with a pair of lay-ups, but was answered by a 6-0 run by Montclair, including a made free throw and three-pointer by Philipp. An and-one conversion by ALEXIS STROLLO and a good lay-in from MADISON MARCOTTE pushed the Red Hawks' lead out to 35-16 with just over half of the quarter remaining. After back-to-back layups from the Scarlet Raiders, a three from Craigwell ignited a 9-2 run to wrap up the first half and give the Red Hawks a commanding 44-22 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
- A made free throw by Craigwell and a layup from SHANNON HUGHES kicked off the scoring in the third period. The quarter went back and forth the rest of the quarter, with neither team able to generate a true run. Both teams saw success from the free throw line in the quarter, with Montclair converting 6-for-8 and Rutgers 6-for-9, and the score went 62-34 heading into the final frame.
- The Scarlet Raiders notched a made free throw and took advantage of a Montclair turnover to convert a layup in the first thirty seconds of the fourth period. Montclair responded with a three from MALVINA SULLIVAN and a bucket from Craigwell to jump out 67-37. Each team fought tooth and nail down the stretch in another fairly even quarter, but a dominant first half by Montclair led them to a 78-48 final.
