Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vero’s Career-High Double-Double Lifts Women’s Basketball Over Rutgers-Camden, 75-49

Montclair, NJ- Senior OLIVIA VERO notched a career-high double-double on Saturday afternoon with 24 points and 12 rebounds that helped lift the Montclair State University Women's Basketball team (17-3, 11-2 NJAC) to a 75-49 win at home against Rutgers-Camden (8-12, 4-9 NJAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rutgers-Camden held a slight 6-5 advantage in the first three minutes of the game before a pair of made free throws by BRIANNA MONTAJES flipped the score in Montclair's favor and started a 7-0 run that put the score at 12-6 at the 5:49 mark. The two teams continued to exchange points the rest of the quarter and the Red Hawks eventually held a 26-19 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • The defense was strong for the first minute and a half into the game before a free throw from Vero and a jumper from SOPHIE BENEVENTINE gave Montclair their first double-digit lead at 29-19. The Scarlet Raptors converted an and-one to push the lead back to single digits but layups from MADISON MARCOTTE, and Vero, and a three from ISABELLA ORLANDO, jumped them back out to a strong lead of 14. Montclair kept Camden at bay the rest of the quarter and took a 42-29 lead into the half.
  • Defense was the theme in a third quarter that only saw 16 total points scored between both teams. The Red Hawks still outscored the Scarlet Raptors, 10-6, and had a 52-35 lead heading into the fourth. Beneventine accounted for half of Montclair's third-quarter points with five.
  • After Camden kicked off the quarter with a jumper, SHANNON HUGHES collected a second-chance three to move out to a 55-37 lead. The Scarlet Raptors responded with a three-pointer of their own and sparked a 9-2 run that cut the lead to 11 at 59-48 with 5:27 remaining in the game. That was the closest they got to changing the game in their favor as the Red Hawks compiled a 15-1 run down the stretch to seal a 75-49 win at home

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Montclair moved their win streak up to nine in a row and 11 straight in conference play. They haven't tasted defeat since December 30, 2024, against Shenandoah. The Red Hawks are currently tied for first place in the NJAC with TCNJ and currently own that tiebreaker.
  • Vero's 24 points were a career-high which topped the career-high of 23 she had last season against William Paterson. She also notched her fifth double-double of the season.
  • The Red Hawks also saw three more double-digit scoring efforts in the game from ALEXIS STROLLO (13), Hughes (12), and Beneventine (12).
  • The team took advantage of Rutgers-Camden's 22 turnovers, turning it into 22 points.
