Clermont, Florida – The Montclair State softball team (3-4) saw a Thursday evening split when they kicked off their day with a 5-3 win against Washington College (2-7) and then were defeated by North Central (6-6), 4-1.
Game 1: Montclair State vs. Washington College
How It Happened
- RILEIGH GLYNN led off the game with a bunt single and stole second. She advanced to third on a ground out by SOPHIA ALONSO and finished her trip around the bases on a CARLEE IANNONE RBI single to right field to put the Red Hawks out in front 1-0.
- Montclair extended its lead to 2-0 at the top of the second inning. BELLA BUCY was hit by pitch and made it all the way around to third on a double to right field by JAYLA VASQUEZ. Glynn then drove home Bucy on an RBI single to center field to extend the Red Hawk lead.
- After a scoreless third inning, the Shorewomen fought back and cut the lead in half on an RBI single to right center to make the score 2-1.
- The Red Hawks pushed their lead further in the top of the fifth. Glynn continued her hot game with a lead-off single to left field. A double from Alonso put both of them in scoring position, and an error on the shortstop during MOLLY COLLIGAN's at-bat plated both Glynn and Alonso for a 4-1 edge.
- Washington fought back again with a pair of runs being scored on an RBI double and an RBI single to left center to narrow the deficit to 4-3.
- Montclair found one more run in the contest in the top of the seventh. Glynn led off again with a single, this time to left field. She stole another base and circled the diamond on an Iannone RBI double to right center to push the lead out to 5-3.
- Bucy and the Red Hawk defense retired the side in the bottom of the frame to seal the win
Inside the Numbers
- Glynn had a perfect day from the plate, hitting 4-for-4 and scoring three runs and collecting an RBI. She also stole two bases.
- Iannone hit 2-for-4 and led the team with two RBI. She also joined Vasquez and Alonso with extra base hits.
- Bucy notched her first win as a Red Hawk, going all seven innings inside the circle. She allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out five batters.
Game 2: Montclair State vs. North Central
How It Happened
- After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals struck first with a solo shot over the fence to take a 1-0 lead. They extended it to 3-0 on an RBI double and an RBI single.
- North Central pushed themselves out to a comfortable lead of 4-0 in the top of the seventh on an error.
- Backs against the wall in the final half inning of the game and facing one out, LIZ MULLEN singled and stole second. After a strikeout, AVERY MOCHRIE brought Mullen home on an RBI single to avoid the shutout. The Red Hawks were not able to get things clicking enough as a pop out to second base on the next at-bat sealed the game for the Cardinals.
Inside the Numbers
- Mullen and Vasquez led for the Red Hawks offensively. They both went 2-for-3 with Mullen also collecting a run scored and a stolen base.
- Colligan had the lone extra base hit of the game with a double in the bottom of the second.
- CHEYANNE WEIGAND got the start and suffered the loss when she pitched three innings. She allowed three runs on five hits and struck out a batter.
- SAGE RIZZI replaced Weigand in the fourth inning and had a good outing, allowing only one run on one hit and striking out a season-high four batters.
