Chestertown, Md. – The Montclair State University women's lacrosse team (4-3) was tripped up on the road Wednesday, suffering a 19-11 defeat against Washington College (3-5).
How It Happened
- Both teams found the net early, with the Shorewomen scoring just 27 seconds into the game. The Red Hawks responded as the clock hit 14:00, with AMRA LUKOVIC notching Montclair's first goal. However, Washington went on a five-goal run to close out the quarter, taking a 6-1 lead into the second.
- The Shorewomen continued their offensive pressure, extending their lead to 7-1 with a goal just 27 seconds into the second quarter. NORAH MONAGHAN answered for Montclair at the 14:24 mark, followed by another goal from Lukovic at 13:03, assisted by JOELLE D'ANGELO, cutting the deficit to 7-3. Washington added another goal at 9:24, but Montclair responded with a woman-up goal from CARA MCCARTNEY and a KAELEY SEK tally off a CHELSEA STACK assist, narrowing the gap to 8-5 with 7:26 left in the half. The Shorewomen regained momentum, scoring twice in the final minutes, including one with just nine seconds remaining, to take a 10-5 lead into halftime.
- Washington opened the second half with two quick goals in the first 2:30 before McCartney netted her second goal to make it 12-6. The Shorewomen then surged ahead, reaching the running clock threshold (16-6) with four consecutive goals between the 7:47 and 4:26 marks. Monaghan's second goal at 2:45 helped keep Montclair within single digits, but Washington answered with two more scores, entering the fourth quarter with an 18-7 advantage.
- Sek's second goal ignited a four-goal run for the Red Hawks, trimming the deficit to 18-11. However, Washington sealed the game with one final goal at the 54-second mark to secure the 19-11 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- McCartney and Sek led the Red Hawks with three goals each. Sek also tied for the team lead in ground balls with three.
- Starting goalkeeper JOEY GROTKOPF played 39:52, making five saves in the loss. LEA HEGEWALD provided 20 minutes of relief, recording two saves.
- Despite the loss, Montclair excelled on the clear, converting 9-of-11 attempts, and capitalized on two woman-up opportunities.
