Late Heroics in Game Two Helps Lift Softball to an NJAC-Opening Split Against Stockton

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State softball team (13-7, 1-1 NJAC) was blanked in game one of its NJAC-Opening doubleheader against Stockton (11-7, 1-1 NJAC), 5-0, but late heroics in game two lifted the Red Hawks over of the Ospreys, 3-2 for a day split.

Game 1

How It Happened

  • The game began as a pitchers' duel between SAGE RIZZI and Nerina Tramp, with neither team recording a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning. SOPHIA ALONSO broke the deadlock with a leadoff single and stole second, but Montclair couldn't capitalize, leaving the game scoreless.
  • Stockton broke through in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on two RBI doubles, a two-RBI single, and a throwing error to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
  • The Red Hawks struggled offensively, managing just two hits in the game. MARIALYS RICOURT singled in the sixth but was left stranded as Montclair was unable to mount a comeback.

Inside the Numbers

  • Ricourt and Alonso recorded Montclair's only hits.
  • Rizzi started in the circle, pitching 5.2 innings while allowing five runs on five hits with two strikeouts. BROOKE BIAMONTE relieved Rizzi, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out one batter.

Game 2

How It Happened

  • Stockton took an early lead in the second inning, scoring on a fielder's choice after a double and a single put runners on the corners.
  • The Ospreys extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly.
  • Montclair responded in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, DYLAN BOLES singled, and AVERY MOCHRIE was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. MOLLY COLLIGAN then hit a shallow fly ball to left, where a collision between the left fielder and shortstop allowed KATIE BRUNNER, who pinch-ran for Boles, to score. JAYLA VASQUEZ followed with a deep double off the left-field wall, bringing in Colligan and Mochrie to put Montclair ahead 3-2.
  • In the seventh, Montclair quickly secured two outs, but a Stockton pinch hitter extended the game with a single. Another single to right seemed to threaten the Red Hawks' lead, but Mochrie fielded the ball and fired a perfect throw to Colligan at third to tag out the advancing runner, sealing the NJAC victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Colligan led Montclair's offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Vasquez and CARLEE IANNONE both recorded doubles, with Iannone also leading the defense with five putouts.
  • BELLA BUCY pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts, earning her sixth win of the season.
