Softball Drops Senior Day Doubleheader Against #2 Rowan

Montclair, NJ – Despite a really exciting finish to game two that saw the Red Hawks with the lead in the final inning of game two, the Montclair State University softball team (24-14, 9-9 NJAC) dropped its Senior Day Doubleheader against #2 Rowan (39-1, 17-1 NJAC), 10-0 in six innings and 5-4 in eight innings on Friday afternoon.

Game 1

How It Happened

  • The Profs threatened early with a bases-loaded opportunity in the first inning. They drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, but the Red Hawks' defense held firm to limit the damage.
  • SOPHIA ALONSO and LIZ MULLEN opened up their games with base hits but were stranded in the inning. Rowan doubled their lead on an RBI single through the left side to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Rowan kept growing the lead with pairs of runs in both the top of the third and fourth innings. In the third, they scored on an RBI double to left center and a sacrifice fly to left field. In the fourth, the notched runs on a throwing error and a wild pitch to push the lead out to 6-0.
  • Montclair looked like it could avoid the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning with another runner in scoring position, but was unable to capitalize.
  • The Profs got themselves into the run-rule position in the top of the sixth inning on four runs that gave them a 10-0 lead. They scored on a sacrifice fly to center field, an RBI double down the left field line, a wild pitch, and a fielder's choice RBI. In the bottom of the frame, Alonso singled up the middle and stole second, but Rowan shut the game down and secured the game-one victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • LIZ MULLEN led the way, going 2-for-3 in the game. She also had the Red Hawks' lone stolen base.
  • Alonso, Boles, and Iannone each collected hits in the game.
  • SAGE RIZZI suffered the loss as the starting pitcher. She pitched three innings and allowed four runs on five hits. BROOKE BIAMONTE replaced her in the fourth inning to pitch the last three innings. She allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits and struck out three batters.

Game 2

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first inning, it was the Red Hawks who got on the board first in game two in the bottom of the second inning. Iannone led off with a double to left center. Boles advanced her to second on a lineout. Julianna Casillas smacked a ball up the middle that drove home Iannone for the opening run of the game.
  • Montclair extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when JORDYN HESTER got all of a pitch over the plate and sent a ball well over the left field fence for a solo homer.
  • Rowan led off the top of the fifth with a home run of their own over the same fence to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • The Red Hawks found two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. KATIE BRUNNER led off with a double to left center and was replaced on base by Maddie Leech. RILEIGH GLYNN singled to third base to put runners on the corners for Alonso, who plated Leech for an RBI single up the middle and got Glynn to third base. Iannone notched the sacrifice fly that plated Glynn, and Montclair had a 4-1 advantage that they took into the final inning.
  • Backs against the wall, the Profs needed three runs to keep the game going. They proved why they are a top team in the nation when they cut the lead to 4-3 on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single up the middle. With two outs and bases loaded and a full count, the Red Hawks needed just one strike to secure the upset, but a ball was called, and the game was tied 4-4. Rowan had the chance to drive in more runs in regulation, but an incredible diving catch from Glynn kept the game tied. Alonso was the only player to get on base in the bottom of the seventh, and the game went into extra innings.
  • Starting with a runner on second, Rowan put the runners in the places they needed, and a sacrifice fly gave them a 5-4 advantage. Their defense held off the Red Hawks, and they completed a big rally to wrap up the regular season.
