Softball Sees NJAC Split at Rutgers-Camden

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University softball team (18-8, 4-2 NJAC) saw a split with New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Rutgers-Camden (4-17, 2-4 NJAC), being downed 3-0 in game one but rallying in game two with a 6-1 win.

Game 1

How It Happened

  • The Scarlet Raptors got off the board early in the bottom of the first inning when back-to-back doubles earned them a 1-0 advantage.
  • Montclair generated a good opportunity to score in the top of the second inning. MOLLY COLLIGAN got on base with a single to left field and stole second. JULIANA CASILLAS then batted a ball off the pitcher's foot for a base hit and put runners on the corners. She stole second to put her a Colligan both in scoring position but were both left stranded.
  • Three errors in the Red Hawk field led to a run in the bottom of the third for a 2-0 lead. Camden eventually extended the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to center field for a 3-0 advantage.
  • The Red Hawks were unable to generate a true comeback attempt in the final two innings of the game, and they fell in game one.

Inside the Numbers

  • Five different Red Hawks generated hits in the game with JAYLA VASQUEZ hitting the lone extra-base hit with a double in the top of the fourth.
  • BELLA BUCY suffered the loss inside the circle for Montclair. She pitched four innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out two batters.
  • BROOKE BIAMONTE replaced Bucy and pitched two innings. She allowed only one run on two hits and struck out a batter.

Game 2

How It Happened

  • Game two started off much better for Montclair. LIZ MULLEN singled down the right field line and stole second. A CARLEE IANNONE foul out placed her on third, and she scored on a wild pitch. DYLAN BOLES was sent to base on balls and got all the way to third on a ground-rule double by KATIE BRUNNER. A passed ball scored Boles and pushed Brunner to third for Colligan to bat her home on an RBI single to center field. Montclair took a 3-0 lead after the opening half inning.
  • It took until the top of the fifth for the next run to come in. Mullen reached on an error and stole second. A ground out moved her to third, and she completed her trip around the bases on a Boles sacrifice fly to left field for a 4-0 advantage.
  • The long ball was big for the Red Hawks at the top of the sixth when ABIGAIL ZEBICK and Vasquez hit back-to-back home runs to extend the Montclair lead to 6-0. Both of which were their first collegiate home runs.
  • The lone Rutgers-Camden score came in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI down the left field line to put them on the board 6-1. Montclair did not allow a hit after that and took game two.
