Second Half Surge Pushes #14 Men's Soccer Past NYU, 3-1

Montclair, NJ The #14 Montclair State University men's soccer team defeated NYU 3-1 behind a pair of second half goals on Wednesday night at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (6-0-2) battled the Violets over the opening 20 minutes, holding a slight 3-2 edge in shots. Shortly after, NYU registered the game's first attempt on frame, as DIESEL FIORE notched a stop to maintain the scoreless contest. The visitors broke through in the 36th minute, however, as they pounced with a header on an in-swinging corner kick from the near side of the field.
  • Montclair pushed to equalize in the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza and would break through with 17 seconds remaining on the clock. GABE MENDEZ placed a pass to SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI on the near touchline, who served a perfectly placed ball into the box that was looped over the keeper and into the top shelf on a header by KYLE MOORE.
  • Four minutes into the second half, the Red Hawks took the lead. After a turnover from the Violets inside of the 18-yard box, TOMAS MONTEIRO tucked a pass to KENET LOPEZ, who ripped a shot on goal. After the keeper parried the ball away, KEVIN CONTRERAS collected the ball, cut to the left, and slid a shot into the far corner. Fiore notched a save shortly after to maintain the lead for the home side, who did not allow another shot attempt for the next 30 minutes.
  • Montclair doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick goal from DANNY TOBON after he was taken down in the box. NYU recorded a pair of shots in the final 10 minutes of the contest, but the Red Hawks tightened up defensively and almost added to their lead again on shots from Moore and THOMAS PUGLIESE.
