Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team (2-7) hosted Washington & Lee (5-3) and was bested by the Generals, 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· The Generals came out hot in the first period, collecting two goals in the first seven minutes of the contest. The first was scored on a ball played off a Montclair defender at the 1:09 mark. The other was scored when a W&L player collected her own saved shot and dumped the ball to a teammate, who pushed it into the cage to take a 2-0 lead. NATALIE SURMA took the lone shot of the quarter, but it was blocked.
· Montclair saw a pair of penalty corner opportunities in the 20th minute, but was unable to capitalize. Washington & Lee then extended its lead to 3-0 in the 22nd minute after a quick hitter off a save was sent past SYDNEY WHITE.
· W&L saw all of the offensive opportunities in the third period, registering five shots and holding Montclair to none. They put four of the five on goal, but White stood firm and denied another General goal.
· Washington & Lee saw a few more opportunities early in the fourth quarter, but White collected a pair of saves to keep the score at 3-0. The Red Hawks saw one last push to avoid the shutout with 20 seconds remaining. Off a penalty corner, SADIE EICHLIN arced a shot over the goalkeeper. The shot was saved by a General defender, but EMMA BIANCO batted the ball in off the rebound to avoid the shutout and end the game at 3-1.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
· White tallied nine saves in the game today.
· Bianco scored her first goal of the season.
· Washington & Lee outshot Montclair 14-7 (12-4 on goal), but the game was tied in penalty corners at five apiece.
