Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Edges Swarthmore, 1-0

Montclair, NJ Behind a late first half goal from TOMAS MONTEIRO, the Montclair State University men's soccer team edged Swarthmore 1-0 on Friday night at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (2-0-1) created a chance in the opening minutes, as DIEGO FLORES fired a shot on goal that was collected by the Garnet keeper. Swarthmore countered with a pair of shots in the 11th minute, neither finding its way on frame. Six minutes later, KENET LOPEZ looked to open the scoring with a low shot that was stopped by the visitors.
  • Montclair struck for the game's lone goal in the 37th minute. CARLOS BEDOYA served in an in-swinging corner kick from the near side of the field that was cleared initially by Swarthmore, but the ball fell to the feet of JAYDEN WESLEY well outside the box. Wesley tucked a pass back to Bedoya in the nearside corner, who immediately sent the ball back in to be headed past the keeper by Monteiro.
  • Following the halftime break, the Red Hawks applied pressure offensively to try and double the advantage. Montclair rattled off six out of eight shot attempts during a 10-minute span, including an attempt on goal by LOGAN NENO. The Garnet notched their first shot on goal in the 67th minute, an attempt that was scooped by DIESEL FIORE.
  • Swarthmore made one final push to equalize late in the contest, collecting four shot attempts in the last 10 minutes of the game. The Garnet ripped an attempt towards the top of the frame in the 83rd minute that had to be parried away by Fiore, with the Montclair keeper coming up with another key stop shortly after the ensuing corner kick to seal the victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • The goal for Monteiro was the first of his collegiate career, with Bedoya and Wesley each notching their first career assists.
  • Wesley has notched a goal contribution in back-to-back contests.
  • Fiore tallied three saves in net for the Red Hawks, recording his second clean sheet in three starts.
  • Montclair held a 15-12 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge on goal.
  • The Red Hawks have allowed just one goal in 270 minutes to open the season.
