Volleyball Remains Unbeaten; Sweeps Baruch and Lebanon Valley

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University volleyball team continued its hot start to the 2025 season with back-to-back sweeps of Baruch and Lebanon Valley on Saturday afternoon at the Panzer Athletic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (6-0) jumped out on Baruch early in the opening contest of the day, posting seven of the first nine points. Following a Baruch point, two attack errors and a kill from CAMRYN MUUSS pushed the Red Hawk advantage to 10-3. The home side rattled off six of the following eight points to go up double-figures, a run capped off by a kill from KASEY TRZASKA. The Bearcats countered with a 7-2 run to bring the margin within six, but SOFIA DIPROFIO answered with a kill on the ensuing point to end the push. Montclair closed out the frame with six of the final seven points, finished by a service ace from EMMA HATCHER.
  • With the margin 3-1 early in the second stanza, the Red Hawks amassed eight consecutive points, including three consecutive service aces from Hatcher, to jump out to a 10-point advantage. Baruch trimmed the score to 13-5, but BRYN BAUTISTA collected a kill followed by an attack error from the Bearcats to once again jump to double-figures. After a point from the Bearcats, the home side rattled off their second 8-0 run of the frame to build a 23-6 advantage. Montclair closed with two of the final three points to take the set.
  • SAMMY MIZAK collected a pair of service aces in the opening stages of the third set as Montclair built a 5-1 lead. After Baruch cut the game down to 9-4, the Red Hawks embarked on a run of seven-straight points, headlined by two kills from Mizak. With the score 17-6, Montclair closed out the match with eight points in a row, including two service aces from EMILY CARCICH.
  • In their second match of the afternoon, the Red Hawks continued their strong showing by posting 10 of the first 11 points against Lebanon Valley, as LUCY CORNELIUS notched a pair of service aces and Bautista added three kills to force a timeout. The visitors trimmed the margin to nine later in the frame, 18-9, but the Red Hawks would push back to double-digits shortly after on a kill from Muuss and an ace from Hatcher. Following two points from Lebanon Valley, Montclair ended the set with three in a row on consecutive attack errors.
  • The visitors held a slim advantage 10-9 in the beginning stages of the second frame, but a quick trio of aces from Cornelius pushed the Red Hawks in front. Level at 12, Montclair rattled off four points in a row and eight of nine to build a 20-13 lead. Lebanon Valley trimmed the deficit to four, but a kill from Craig initiated a 5-1 run to end the set in favor of the Red Hawks.
  • A kill from Muuss and ace from Mizak notched a 8-3 lead for Montclair in the third frame, but the visitors climbed back to tie the contest at 13 later on. Lebanon Valley took the lead at 18-17, but a service error leveled the set and was followed by an attack error and kill from Hatcher to force a timeout from the visitors. After the break, Montclair continued to open the margin, jumping out 24-21 and closing out the afternoon with another kill from Muuss.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • With the pair of victories, Montclair continued its best start since 1998, when it opened the campaign with seven wins in a row.
  • The Red Hawks have posted a winning streak of six or more in four seasons dating back to the 2019 campaign.
  • BREANNA CRAIG led the way in the opening match offensively with seven kills, with Bautista and Muuss close behind with five each.
  • Hatcher matched her season-high with seven aces. Carcich set a new career-high with four in the contest. As a team, Montclair held a 14-1 advantage in the category.
  • Bautista finished the second match with a team-leading 11 kills, one off her season-high. She added 11 digs defensively for her third double-double of the campaign. Muuss notched her fourth double-figure kill performances of the season with 10.
  • Thomas led the way defensively with a season-best five blocks, with DiProfio adding six kills and a season-best four blocks.
  • Cornelius tallied a career-best and game-high six aces against Lebanon Valley.
