White Records 300th Career Save in Home Loss to Connecticut

Montclair, NJ – Montclair State University field hockey (5-7) junior goalkeeper SYDNEY WHITE reached a career milestone on Wednesday night, recording her 300th career save in a 3-0 loss to Connecticut (4-7).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Connecticut College struck first in the opening quarter, finding the back of the net at the 7:57 mark to break the ice. Despite heavy early pressure from the visitors, the Red Hawks stayed resilient, highlighted by a massive defensive save to keep it a one-goal game through the first 15 minutes.
  • The Camels extended their lead late in the second period, capitalizing on a steady offensive push to slip another shot past the defense at 27:51. The Red Hawks fought right back before the halftime horn, forcing a pair of quick penalty corners and testing the opposing goalkeeper with a close-range look from AVERY DIPIETRO.
  • The third quarter turned into a physical, back-and-forth defensive battle. Connecticut College picked up the first card of the contest with a green card at the 38:48 mark, followed shortly by another green card at 42:45. Despite playing shorthanded during these stretches, the visitors' defense held strong against multiple penalty corners to keep the deficit at two.
  • Connecticut College put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, converting another goal at 53:54 to make it 3-0. As play grew increasingly physical down the stretch, the Camels picked up two more disciplinary cards, including a yellow card at 52:12 and another yellow card at 57:39. Refusing to back down, the Red Hawks cranked up the intensity, generating a flurry of late penalty corners and firing off hard shots from NATALIE SURMA, but they were unable to crack the scoreboard before the final whistle.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • White becomes the fifth goalkeeper in program history to eclipse the 300-save mark. She finished the night with seven.
  • Connecticut outshot the Red Hawks 14-3 in the matchup (10-2 shots on goal). The two teams were even 6-6 on penalty corners.
  • Surma and DiPetro had the lone shots on goal for Montclair.
FROM THE FIELD

  • "Congratulations to Syd White on a career milestone tonight with her 300th save. Syd anchored our defensive unit again tonight with many critical saves throughout the game. Conn College did a good job challenging us with a fast and physical style of play. We need to do a better job receiving and possessing the ball in transition to attack. We are motivated to get right back to work tomorrow as we prepare for an important NJAC game on Saturday." Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly

UP NEXT
  • Montclair looks to bounce back by taking on (#15) Rowan at home this Saturday, October 17th at 5:00 PM in their third home NJAC matchup.
