Second Half Surge Powers #15 Men's Soccer Past Kean, 4-1

Union, NJ – The #15 Montclair State University Men's Soccer team used a second half surge to power past Kean 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon to extend its unbeaten streak to 12 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (13-2-2, 5-0-2 NJAC) created an opportunity early in the afternoon, as a centering ball played in from the left side of the field was flicked towards goal by TOMAS MONTEIRO in the fifth minute. Montclair continued to search for the game's opening strike, with JOSH VIRGIL sending a shot just high of the net in the 14th minute. The Cougars registered their first look of the day in the 22nd minute, as PIERRE SOUMEILLANT parried away a shot towards the low left post to keep the game scoreless.
  • Kean generated their best look of the opening stanza five minutes later, as a point-blank rip right in front of goal was blocked off the line by SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI. With the two sides continuing to pitch a solid defensive effort, Montclair began to crack through in the latter stages of the half. The visitors found the breakthrough goal in the 44th minute, as ROBBY DASLER surged across the midway line, shifted past a defender, and slotted a pass towards the left wing for LOGAN NENO for a right-footed finish past the keeper to put Montclair up one at the break.
  • The visitors began the second half on the front foot, as Monteiro saw a shot saved in the 47th minute before ringing another attempt off the right woodwork five minutes later. The barrage continued, as Virgil recorded a pair of shots on goal as the contest approached the hour mark. Kean found the equalizer in the 74th minute, as a long ball found a runner on the far wing past the back line. The Cougars made a run to the end line and placed a centering pass in front for a tap-in. Montclair pushed right back off the restart, as Virgil chipped a cross towards the far post that was headed past the keeper by Dasler to put the visitors back in front 2-1.
  • Montclair expanded its lead shortly after in the 79th minute, as IVAN GARCIA drew a foul in the box along the end line, leading to a right-footed penalty kick towards the left post from SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI. The Red Hawks, with the added advantage, tightened up defensively and did not allow a shot attempt from Kean the rest of the way. Montclair added a final marker of the afternoon in the 85th minute as JAYDEN WESLEY rocketed in a left-footed volley off a right-footed service from KYLE MOORE along the near touch line to make the final margin three.
