Early Goal from Orellena Pushes Women’s Soccer Past Rutgers-Camden, 1-0

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University women's soccer (11-2-2, 5-2-1 NJAC) saw an early goal from sophomore SOPHIA ORELLANA that pushed the Red Hawks past Rutgers-Camden (8-4-3, 4-4-0 NJAC), 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Camden fired off the first two shots in the fourth minute of action, one of which was denied by MACKENZIE SIBELLO. Orellana had an opportunity to put in the goal earlier in the seventh minute, but had the shot saved. It was off a CARLY GUZZARDO free kick, where Orellana was able to bury the goal to give Montclair a 1-0 lead.
  • Montclair went right back on the attack, registering shots from Orellana and EMMA EDWARDS. Orellana hit the woodwork, while Edwards had her shot stopped by the Camden goalkeeper. The Scarlet Raptors had the last shot of the half in the 41st minute with Sibello making another key save, and Montclair took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
  • Off the second-half kickoff, Rutgers-Camden went to work with two shots in the first three minutes of the second half. The first went out top left and the other, off a free kick, was saved by Sibello. A corner kick at the 61:27 timestamp gave Montclair a few chances to extend the lead inside their attacking zone. KIRA HENDERSON got off a shot that missed out right, while KAYLEE LAUBER missed in the opposite direction.
  • Montclair continued its pressure on Camden, rattling off four shots between the 69th minute and the 78th minute. Both Guzzardo and SAMIRA LUKOVIC each saw two shots, but none were able to find the back of the net. The Scarlet Raptors received a red card in the 83rd minute that put them down a man for the final stretch of the match. Despite that, they had several opportunities to hit the equalizer. Two shots missed their mark, and in one final attempt, they put a shot on goal with just four seconds remaining, but Sibello made the stand and secured a road NJAC win for the Red Hawks.
