Women’s Flag Football Cruises to 58-0 Win at LIU

Brookville, NY. – The Montclair State University women's flag football team (2-1, 2-1 ECAC) went on the road on Monday and cruised to a 58-0 win at LIU (0-3, 0-3 ECAC).  

How It Happened

  • Montclair came out firing right out of the gate. On the second play from scrimmage, EMILY DEL ROSARIO ripped off a 55-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.
  • KIMORA WESTON picked the ball off on LIU's first possession, but Montclair was forced to punt on their next drive.
  • On the Shark's first punt of the game, GENEVIEVE FARA returned the punt 40 yards to set up a 10-yard touchdown run for NYLEA UNDERWOOD and extended the lead to 14-0 after one quarter of play.
  • RHIANNA BUENO forced another interception, and the next Montclair drive was capped off by a 12-yard connection from HADDIYAH BELL to MAYA ANICO.
  • At the 5:31 mark in the second quarter, Bell found GIANNAMARIE GREENHALGH, and she scampered for a 22-yard touchdown reception. Fara capped off scoring in the first half with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Montclair held a commanding 27-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Anico kicked off the second half, forcing another turnover on an interception, but the Red Hawks returned the favor on their next drive.
  • Following an interception forced by SERENITY MUHAMMED, Underwood broke off a 21-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 33-0.
  • Weston nabbed her second interception of the day and set Del Rosario's second rushing touchdown, this time from five yards out.
  • Before the end of the third quarter, Fara continued her big day with a 33-yard touchdown run end Montclair held a big lead of 51-0 entering the final stanza.
  • The lone touchdown of the fourth quarter came from Fara on a 22-yard run and put the stamp on a dominant 58-0 win.

Inside the Numbers

  • Montclair's defense created seven turnovers on interceptions, led by Weston, who recorded two. They also held LIU to an astounding -13 rushing yards and just 30 yards of total offense
  • Fara had an exceptional day. She rushed four times for 64 yards and two touchdowns. She totaled three with the pick-six.
  • Del Rosario led rushing with 78 yards on five carries and a pair of rushing touchdowns.
  • Anico showed off her versatility again. She caught three passes for 29 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, she had a sack, a pass breakup, and an interception.

  • Montclair will see LIU again next week, but on Sprague Field on Monday, March 30. The game is set for a 5:00 p.m. tilt.
