Women’s Lacrosse Earns 16-6 Road Win at Eastern Connecticut State

Montclair, NJ. – The Montclair State University women's lacrosse team (5-4) went on the road to take on Eastern Connecticut State (4-6), where they earned a 16-6 win on Saturday evening.

How It Happened

  • The Red Hawks fell behind early when an early green card set the Warriors up with a man-up goal just over a minute into the game. AMRA LUKOVIC took the next draw and went down the field and scored to even the game. KYRA MORENA was awarded a free position and scored a 11:41 to take the lead for Montclair. Eastern Connecticut retook the lead with goals at 8:49 and 6:01, but Montclair saw two goals down the stretch in the quarter. Morena found KAELEY SEK for a goal at 3:23, and a yellow card set up a man-up goal at 1:09, when Morena dished out an assist to CARA MCCARTNEY, and Montclair went up 4-3 after one quarter of play.
  • Montclair kept possession for most of the second quarter. After a few shots, missed the mark, LEXI ROBINSON put a free position shot into the back of the net at the 9:27 timestamp. The game then stalled out on scoring until 5:18, where a man-up goal from Sek sparked three goals in the next three minutes for an 8-3. The Warriors tried to narrow the deficit in the final two and a half minutes of the half, but Grotkopf kept them off the board with two saves and kept the score at 8-3 entering intermission.
  • An Eastern Connecticut goal at the 11:48 mark in the third was answered by two quick goals from Lukovic to extend the lead to 10-4. Following a Warrior goal, McCartney assisted two goals, one to Kaydrianna Toledo and one to Sek, for a 12-5 advantage with 6:32 remaining in the third. Robinson put in one more goal before the period ended with 48 seconds remaining, scoring on a free position to give the Red Hawks a 13-5 lead heading into the fourth.
  • Another Red Hawk goal was scored off the stick of McCartney with just over a minute into the fourth quarter. The Warriors answered at the 7:45 timestamp to put the score at 14-6, but were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way. The final two goals of the game were scored by ASHLEY CASTILLO, who slotted a goal in with an assist from MIA CUCCINELLO, and Lukovic off a man-up free position to stamp a 16-6 win.

Inside the Numbers

  • Lukovic led the way in goals with four that mirrored her performance on Wednesday against Ramapo for eight goals on the week. She also nabbed six draw controls.
  • Morena was Montclair's points leader with six on three goals and three assists. McCartney was not far behind with five points on two goals and three assists.
  • The Montclair ride was exceptional today, forcing 10 failed Eastern Connecticut clears.
  • Robinson caused a team-high five turnovers to go along with two goals.
  • The Red Hawks outshot the Warriors 39 to 17 and 23 to eight on goal.
  • Grotkopf picked up the win in goal and made seven saves in the game.
