Vierbuchen Collects 100th Career Goal; Men's Lacrosse Tops Marywood 15-9

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University Men's Lacrosse team capped off its three-game homestand with a 15-9 victory over Marywood on Wednesday evening at Sprague Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (10-2) broke the scoring open within the first two minutes, as CORBIN QUINTERO forced a turnover from the Pacers, leading to a strike from JACKSON SIMONS off a feed from RYAN VIERBUCHEN. Marywood countered with a caused turnover and goal of their own a minute later to equalize, as the home side would regain their advantage on a marker from BRIAN KELLY at the ten minute mark. After the Pacers tied the contest again, Montclair tallied a pair of goals from MAX MOROSOFF to vault ahead 4-2 with just under seven minutes on the clock. Marywood answered with three-straight of their own to surge in front by one, but JONATHAN SLUSSER would provide the leveler in the final minute of the stanza for the home side.
  • The two sides battled in a low-scoring, defensive second quarter, as neither team could find the back of the net over the first eight minutes. Quintero forced a pair of turnovers, with the Red Hawks tallying seven shots leading to a goal from HENRY NORDSTROM to push Montclair in front at the 7:22 mark. On the ensuing faceoff, Marywood gained possession and equalized 50 seconds later, but would not score over the remainder of the half. A man-up, Montclair tallied a strike from KAI DONAHUE to go back in front, doubling their advantage with two and a half minutes on the clock with a marker from Vierbuchen to make the score 8-6 going into the break.
  • NICHOLI HALSE notched a pair of saves over the opening five minutes of the third quarter, as Kelly would score once again at the 8:28 mark to nudge the margin to three. Quintero generated another turnover from Marywood a few minutes later, leading to a goal from Vierbuchen, who would add another to push Montclair past double-digits. On the resulting possession, Kelly slotted a pass to CARTER FINNEN, who ripped a shot past the keeper to make the score 12-6. The final strike of Montclair's run came from Vierbuchen, who earned his 100th career goal to make the difference seven. Marywood took advantage of a faceoff violation and scored on the other end, but Slusser would score to make the margin 14-7 going into the final period.
  • Two and a half minutes into the fourth, Simons slotted a feed for Morosoff, who notched the final goal of the evening for the Red Hawks. Marywood countered with a pair of goals on the next two possessions to cut the lead to six for Montclair, who would continue to apply pressure offensively with two shots over the next three minutes. The Pacers searched for the run to climb back into the contest, hitting the post while also placing a pair of shots in the direction of Halse, who came up with stops on each to help the Red Hawks seal the home victory to kick off the month of April.
