Softball Stymied in NJAC Quarterfinals at TCNJ, 2-0

Montclair, NJ- The Montclair State University softball team (26-15) faced off against TCNJ (24-13) in the NJAC Quarterfinals, where they were stymied in a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair was on its heels early in the bottom of the first inning. A lead-off walk led to a sacrifice bunt to move the runner. Another walk and a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position, but CARLY MOCKENHAUPT came in clutch with two strikeouts and got out of the jam.
  • JAYLA VASQUEZ batted a single up the middle for the Red Hawks' first hit of the afternoon, but was unable to be moved.
  • A lead-off double in the bottom of the fourth once again led to TCNJ threatening a go-ahead run. With a runner on third thanks to a sacrifice bunt, the Lions tried a suicide squeeze to plate the runner. The bunt went right up to Mockenhaupt, who flipped the ball to KATIE BRUNNER for the tag out at the plate and halted TCNJ's go-ahead attempt.
  • The Red Hawks' best chance to score came in the top of the sixth. SOPHIA ALONSO singled to right field with one out. Following the second out, DYLAN BOLES worked a walk to put two runners on. Alonso attempted to steal third but was thrown out, and the inning stalled.
  • TCNJ broke through in the bottom frame. Facing two outs, a walk put a runner on, and an RBI double to left field plated the go-ahead run. Another ball was belted to left field, where a diving attempt by ZOE TURNER just came out of her glove, and the Lions went ahead 2-0.
  • CARLEE IANNONE tried to spark a late rally with a lead-off single, but TCNJ held strong for three consecutive outs and won to advance to the semifinals.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Vasquez, Alonso, and Iannone were the lone hits for the Red Hawks.
  • Mockenhaupt got the start and went four innings, where she allowed just two hits and struck out a pair of batters.
  • JORDAN TARABOKIA suffered a loss in relief. She went the final two innings and surrendered the two runs on three hits and struck out a batter.
