Montclair, NJ. – The Montclair State University women's flag football team (4-1, 4-1 ECAC) hosted Kean (4-3, 4-2 ECAC) for a Monday evening slate, where they shut down the Cougars by a score of 26-0.
How It Happened
- Kean deferred, and Montclair took possession first. EMILY DEL ROSARIO set the tone of the first drive, ripping off runs of 17 and 20 to get the ball down to the Kean 18. GENEVIEVE FARA connected with MAYA ANICO from 18-yards out for the game's first score.
- The Cougars put together an impressive first drive, getting the ball down to Montclair's eight-yard line. They lined up a pass on second and goal, but were undercut by Fara, who made the interception to keep Kean off the scoreboard. Montclair went into the second quarter up 6-0.
- Montclair took its next drive to the Kean 18, but an interception gave possession back to Kean.
- Both teams exchanged punts, with the Cougars starting a drive with 3:35 left in the half. A deep pass by the Kean QB was intercepted again, this time by Giannamarie Greenhalch, who weaved her way through a wave of Kean players to return it all the way for a 61-yard interception touchdown. A Fara rush on the extra point put Montclair up 13-0, a score they'd take into the second half.
- Kean stalled on its first drive. They needed one yard on a fourth-down attempt, but Fara attacked downhill on a rush attempt and got the tackle for loss to force the turnover on downs.
- After seizing possession, a 19-yard run and a 12-yard run by Del Rosario took the ball down to the one-yard line, where Del Rosario punched it in for a one-yard score, and a successful extra point pushed the lead to 19-0.
- Kean's first play of the next drive ended with another interception; this time forced by SERENITY MUHAMMED.
- The final score of the game happened on a Montclair drive that started with 10:16 remaining. After a short punt, Fara called her own number and showed off her athleticism, making several people miss on her way to a 19-yard touchdown and putting the final stamp on a 26-0 win.
