#22 Women's Soccer Extends Shutout Streak to Three; Blanks Stevens 2-0

Hoboken, NJ The #22 Montclair State University Women's Soccer team tallied its third consecutive shutout on Tuesday night as it blanked Stevens 2-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (4-0-1) broke the scoring open in the fifth minute, as KAYLEE LAUBER collected the ball on the far touch line, surged through a pair of defenders, and made a run into the box. The striker tucked a centering pass through the Stevens back line to an unmarked CARLY GUZZARDO, who ripped a one-time right-footed shot past the keeper.
  • Montclair doubled their advantage five minutes later, as ARIA HICKS booted a long free kick from just inside midfield that took a hop past the keeper's hands and was headed in by SHANNON MULLINS. Neither side registered a shot again until the 22nd minute, as SOPHIA ORELLANA saw an attempt stopped by the Ducks. The home side notched just a pair of looks in the opening half, with the only one on goal coming in the 36th minute that was saved by MACKENZIE SIBELLO.
  • Stevens began to push on the front foot in the second half, recording two shot attempts over the opening eight minutes as Sibello tallied another save. Four minutes later, the keeper registered her third stop of the night on a shot to the low center of goal. The Ducks tallied another two shots over the next 15 minutes as the stanza approached its halfway point, but neither found the frame.
  • Shortly after, the Ducks rang a shot off the right woodwork, with Sibello coming up big with another stop to the low right corner of goal in the 76th minute. The home side sent a shot above the frame three minutes after, and missed high left in the 85th minute. Sibello notched her final save of the night in the waning stages of the contest to help the Red Hawks seal a hard-fought road victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Guzzardo's goal marked her first of the season and second of her collegiate career, with Lauber notching her team-leading fourth assist. The freshman has recorded nine goal contributions through five appearances.
  • Mullins tallied her second-straight game with a goal and increased her career total to 14. The assist for Hicks marked her second during her Montclair tenure and first of the campaign.
  • Sibello matched her season-high of five saves, recording her second clean sheet in three games.
  • Montclair has notched three-straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in 313 minutes dating back to September 4.
  • The Red Hawks are unbeaten through five matches to open the season for the second-straight year and third time over the last five campaigns.
