Field Hockey Notches Overtime Winner Over Muhlenberg, 4-3

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University Field Hockey team (2-4) secured a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against Muhlenberg (2-4), capped off by a game-winning penalty stroke in extra time on Saturday afternoon at Rick Giancola - Sprague Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair State jumped ahead early when AVERY DIPIETRO found the back of the net at the 8:50 mark to give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead. Montclair controlled early offensive pressure with a penalty corner from COLLEEN MCGAVIN and ensuing shots from NATALIE SURMA and DiPietro. Muhlenberg managed to answer right before the horn, converting off a late penalty corner to draw even at 1-1 going into the break.
  • Defense dominated the second period with both sides battling for possession. Montclair generated key scoring chances off a trio of penalty corners taken by McGavin and shots from Surma, BELLA HEISER, and McGavin. Goalkeeper SYDNEY WHITE and the Red Hawk backline kept Muhlenberg off the board, sending both teams into halftime locked at 1-1.
  • Muhlenberg broke the tie late in the period at the 44:22 mark, capitalizing off a quick pass inside to put the Mules up 2-1 heading into the fourth. Montclair pressed hard on the attack, drawing three penalty corners taken by KASEY WATSON and firing shots from EMMA BIANCO and Heiser before the period closed.
  • The Red Hawks brought high intensity to the final frame to ignite a dramatic comeback. DiPietro tied the game 2-2 early in the quarter off an assist from Surma. After Muhlenberg retook a 3-2 lead on a goal at the 54:56 minute mark, Montclair earned a crucial penalty corner inserted by Watson, setting up Bianco from the top of the semi-circle with a slap shot at 58:07 to force overtime.
