Field Hockey Upended by Cortland on Opening Day, 5-0

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team (0-1) was upended during its Opening Day game of 2026 by visiting Cortland (1-0), 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Defense held strong throughout the opening frame. Cortland generated the first push with a corner at the 8:24 mark. The ensuing shot was blocked by a Red Hawk defender. The Red Dragons made one more push in the first period with another corner in the last two minutes, but Montclair held strong, and the game went scoreless into the first break.
  • Cortland broke through early in the second period. SYDNEY WHITE made a nice save, but the shot was collected and pushed past her for the game's first goal at 20:18. Despite a couple more saves down the stretch, the Red Dragons buried two more goals within the final three minutes and held a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Montclair generated an offensive push out of the halftime break. MELISSA BICKFORD put a shot on goal, but it was denied by the Cortland goalkeeper. Cortland followed up with another goal that was fired in off a rebound save and went ahead 4-0 at the 32:59 timestamp. The Red Dragons continued their momentum, taking advantage of another corner and firing in another goal for a 5-0 lead.
  • The beginning half of the fourth period was a back-and-forth with no one finding an offensive surge. Cortland pushed heavy on the back half with six shots, but all were saved by BENNA CLARK, who relieved White at the start of the quarter. EMMA BIANCO had the lone shot of the fourth, and the ball went wide. The final horn sounded with the Red Dragons coming away with a 5-0 performance.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Montclair was outshot 22-5 in the game. Cortland also registered eight penalty corners, while holding Montclair to just one.
  • White suffered the loss in goal as the starter and made eight saves in the game.
  • Clark shone in her collegiate debut. She denied six shots in a row and did not surrender a goal in her one period of action.
